Amarillo Wranglers (1975–1977)
The Amarillo Wranglers were a minor professional ice hockey team in the Southwest Hockey League from 1975 to 1977. This was the second Wranglers ice hockey team established in Amarillo, Texas; the first being the Pittsburgh Penguins farm team described in a separate entry. The Wranglers were established by Las Vegas businessman Ralph Engelstad, founder of the Southwest Hockey League. The league model was unique in that it promoted the educational development of its players. Players received a stipend of $60.00 per month, were provided with room and board, and were provided with tuition and fees to a local university or junior college. Players not drafted by higher leagues could complete their education. The Wranglers wore orange, blue, and white jerseys modeled after the New York Islanders. Amarillo ( ; Spanish for "yellow") is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the seat of Potter County. It is the 14th-most populous city in Texas and the largest city in the Texas Panhandle. Southwest Hockey League
The Southwest Hockey League was a senior ice hockey league that operated in the Southwestern United States from 1975 to 1977. The Southwest Hockey League (SWHL) was established in 1975 to train players for professional leagues. Ralph Engelstad, a former University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux hockey goaltender, Las Vegas casino owner, construction magnate, and entrepreneur, conceived and financed the SWHL in the early 1970s, along with his younger brother, Richard. Six cities awarded teams were: Albuquerque, New Mexico; Amarillo, Texas; Billings, Montana; Butte, Montana; El Paso, Texas; and Reno, Nevada. The purpose of SWHL was to provide a development circuit for young American and Canadian players interested in attending college and playing hockey. It was modeled after a similar system employed by the Canadian National Hockey Team. Amarillo Civic Center
The Amarillo Civic Center is a multi-purpose convention center in Amarillo, Texas. It consists of multiple facilities including: * A 2,848-seat auditorium with 2,324 permanent seats used for concerts, Broadway shows and other events. * The Cal Farley Coliseum, a 4,987-seat multi-purpose arena serving as home to the Amarillo Wranglers of the North American Hockey League and the Amarillo Venom of Champions Indoor Football.
