Freestyle wrestling is a style of wrestling originated from Great Britain and the United States. Along with Greco-Roman, it is one of the two styles of wrestling contested in the Olympic Games. American high school and men's college wrestling is conducted under different rules and is termed scholastic and collegiate wrestling. American collegiate women's wrestling is conducted under freestyle rules. Freestyle wrestling, like collegiate wrestling, has its greatest origins in catch-as-catch-can wrestling. In both styles the ultimate goal is to throw and pin the opponent to the mat, which results in an immediate win. Unlike Greco-Roman, freestyle and collegiate wrestling allow the use of the wrestler's or the opponent's legs in offense and defense. This freestyle wrestling competition consisted of a single-elimination tournament, with a repechage used to determine the winner of two bronze medals. The two finalists faced off for gold and silver medals. Each wrestler who lost to one of the two finalists moved into the repechage, culminating in a pair of bronze medal matches featuring the semifinal losers each facing the remaining repechage opponent from their half of the bracket. Each bout consisted of up to three rounds, lasting two minutes apiece. Ali Bernard (born April 11, 1986 in New Ulm, Minnesota) is a female wrestler, who competes in the women's freestyle heavyweight (72 kg) division. Wrestling Greco-Roman-style in high school at New Ulm High School, she earned the Minnesota state high school championship in 2004. Bernard received a college scholarship to compete in women's wrestling at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada, where she won four national college titles. At the US qualifying for the 2008 Summer Olympics she earned a bye to compete against 2004 bronze medal-winner Katie Downing, whom she defeated in two matches at the 2008 qualifying match in Las Vegas; that feat earned her a spot to compete in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, competing for the United States. Wang Jiao (, born 20 January 1988, Shenyang, Liaoning) is a female Chinese freestyle wrestler who won gold at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics. She was a late replacement for Xu Wang. She beat Jenny Fransson in the first round, Ali Bernard in the quarter-finals and Kyoko Hamaguchi in the semi-finals before beating Stanka Zlateva in the gold medal match. She competed again at the 2012 Summer Olympics, but was less successful. She beat Amarachi Obiajunwa in her first match and Svetlana Saenco in the quarterfinals before losing to Nataliya Vorobyova in the semifinals.
