The Pas
The Pas ( ; french: Le Pas) is a town in Manitoba, Canada, located at the confluence of the Pasquia River and the Saskatchewan River and surrounded by the unorganized Northern Region of the province. It is approximately northwest of the provincial capital, Winnipeg, and from the border of Saskatchewan. It is sometimes still called ''Paskoyac'' by locals after the first trading post, called Fort Paskoya and constructed during French colonial rule. The Pasquia River begins in the Pasquia Hills in east central Saskatchewan. The French in 1795 knew the river as Basquiau. Known as "The Gateway to the North", The Pas is a multi-industry northern Manitoba town serving the surrounding region. University College of the North (UCN) is a post-secondary institution located in Northern Manitoba, Canada. UCN has a student body of approximately 2,400 annually, and a staff of approximately 400. The Chancellor of UCN is Edwin Jebb. History Northern Manitoba Vocational Center was established in The Pas in 1966 and the Thompson campus was opened in the early 1980s. University College of the North was established on July 1, 2004, with the passage of the ''University of the North Act'' in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, and is the successor to Keewatin Community College. The Cree ( cr, néhinaw, script=Latn, , etc.; french: link=no, Cri) are a North American Indigenous people. They live primarily in Canada, where they form one of the country's largest First Nations. In Canada, over 350,000 people are Cree or have Cree ancestry. The ''Thompson Citizen'' is a Canadian newspaper, the longest-running newspaper in Thompson, Manitoba. History Originally started in 1960 by Wellington "Duke" DeCoursey who moved to Thompson from Dauphin, Manitoba, where he published the '' Central Manitoba News''. DeCoursey started other local newspapers, including the ''News of the North'' (in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories) and the '' Birch River Reporter'', as well as authoring books on Canada's north and early Alberta. The newspaper changed from being a weekly publication to printing four editions a week by 1966, before regressing back to a weekly. Duke and Maude DeCoursey published the newspaper until 1971 when it was amalgamated with the ''Nickel Belt News'' forming Precambrian Press, which was the DeCoursey family and the Grant Wright family.
