Amalgamated Engineering And Electrical Union
The Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU) was a British trade union. It merged with the MSF to form Amicus in 2001. History The union was founded in 1992, when the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU) finally achieved a merger with the Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications and Plumbing Union (EETPU), after a hundred years of off-and-on discussions. The new union took the name Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union. The AEU had been affiliated to the Trades Union Congress, while the EETPU was not, so the merged organisation held a ballot on the question of affiliation; members voted for the new union to affiliate. The AEEU was also the largest member of the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions. Membership of the new union continued to fall in line with the decline in employment in the sectors it covered. By 2001, its membership had fallen to 728,200. John Weakley
John Weakley (20 March 1940 – 23 January 1995) was a British trade unionist, who became acting president of the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union. Born in Swansea, Weakley completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker with British Aerospace in Bristol, and joined the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU). He became a shop steward at Westland Helicopters, andslowly came to prominence in the union, associated with its right wing. In the mid-1970s, he took the union's president, Hugh Scanlon, to the High Court, successfully arguing that Scanlon should not use his casting vote in favour of the left-wing of the union's executive. Following his success in court, the right gained control of leading positions in the AEU, starting with John Boyd's 1975 election as general secretary. William Brian Jordan, Baron Jordan, (born 28 January 1936), known as Bill Jordan, is a British economist and Labour politician. The son of Walter and Alice Jordan, he was educated at the Barford Road Secondary Modern School in Birmingham. Sir Kenneth Joseph Jackson (born 3 March 1937) was the General Secretary of the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU) from 1995 until that union's merger with the Manufacturing Science and Finance (MSF) union to form Amicus in 2001. He subsequently became one of the Joint General Secretaries (JGS) of Amicus. Jackson was born and educated in Wigan, Lancashire. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1956 as an electrical technician, and continued in the same profession after re-entering civilian life. In 1966, he was elected as a Branch Secretary in the Electrical Trades Union, later the Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications and Plumbing Union (EETPU). Sir Gavin Harry Laird (14 March 1933 – 26 October 2017) was a Scottish trade unionist, who became General Secretary of the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union (AEEU) and a Member of the Court of the Bank of England. Growing up in Clydebank he attended a local high school then began working for Singer. He became an Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU) shop steward there, then convenor. Three years after taking up a full-time position with the union, he was elected to the AEU executive and later elected AEU general secretary, remaining in that position after the merger which created the AEEU.
