Amalfi's Italian Restaurant, also known as Amalfi's Restaurant and Mercato, is an Italian restaurant in Portland, Oregon. Description Amalfi's is a Black-owned restaurant serving Italian cuisine on Fremont Street in northeast Portland's Cully neighborhood. The menu includes pizza and lasagna. The restaurant hosts live music regularly. ''PDX Rosie'', a mural depicting a Black woman posing like Rosie the Riveter, is painted on the restaurant's exterior. History Amalfi's was established in 1959. Kiauna Floyd has owned the restaurant since 2006. She commissioned ''PDX Rosie'' in 2020. The business used a large tent in the parking lot for outdoor seating during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021). Black-owned businesses (or Black businesses), also known as African-American businesses, originated in the days of slavery before 1865. Emancipation and civil rights permitted businessmen to operate inside the American legal structure starting in the Reconstruction Era (1863–77) and afterwards. By the 1890s, thousands of small business operations had opened in urban areas. The most rapid growth came in the early 20th century, as the increasingly rigid Jim Crow system of segregation moved urban Blacks into a community large enough to support a business establishment. Northeast Portland, Oregon
Northeast Portland is one of the six major divisions of Portland, Oregon. Northeast Portland contains a diverse collection of neighborhoods. For example, while Irvington and the Alameda Ridge feature some of the oldest and most expensive homes in Portland, nearby King is a more working-class neighborhood. Because it is so large, Northeast Portland can essentially be divided ethnically, culturally, and geographically into inner and outer sections. Cully, Portland, Oregon
Cully is a neighborhood in the Northeast section of Portland, Oregon. The neighborhood, as well as NE Cully Blvd. that runs diagonally through it, is named after English stonemason Thomas Cully (1810–1891), an early settler. Cully borders Sunderland, Concordia, and Beaumont-Wilshire on the west, Portland International Airport on the north, Sumner on the east, and Rose City Park and Roseway on the south. Neighborhood parks include Sacajawea Park (1985), Rigler Community Garden (2004), Kʰunamokwst Park (2015), and Whitaker Ponds Nature Park (1998). Nevertheless, Cully has the smallest amount of parkland per capita, and largest population living more than one-half mile from a park, of any Portland neighborhood. ''Street Roots'' is a Portland, Oregon, United States based homeless advocacy group and a weekly alternative newspaper that covers homeless issues. The newsprint is sold by and for the homeless in Portland. The paper is published every Friday and sold through vendors who are currently or formerly homeless. The paper's editorial position is homeless advocacy. Vendors purchase the paper for 25 cents and sell them for $1 and keep the difference of 75 cents. Rosie the Riveter is an allegorical cultural icon in the United States who represents the women who worked in factories and shipyards during World War II, many of whom produced munitions and war supplies. These women sometimes took entirely new jobs replacing the male workers who joined the military. Rosie the Riveter is used as a symbol of American feminism and women's economic advantage. Similar images of women war workers appeared in other countries such as Britain and Australia. The idea of Rosie the Riveter originated in a song written in 1942 by Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb.
