Amal Kassir
Amal Kassir ( ar, امل قصير; born 6 June 1995) is an American international award winning spoken word poet. Early life and education Amal Kassir was born on 6 June 1995 in Denver. She is the fourth of five children. Her name means "hope" in Arabic. She was born to Melissa, an Iowa-German convert to Islam living in Nebraska and Mahmoud Kassir, a Syrian. Her mom had converted to Islam as a teenager. They moved to Denver to join a growing Muslim community. She was passionate for human rights from a young age, as her mother recalled how once when Amal was four and they were cleaning the garage, the child climbed atop the pile of castoff items and began reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Emtithal Mahmoud
Emtithal "Emi" Mahmoud ( ar, إمتثال "إيمي" محمود; born 1992 or 1993 in Darfur, Sudan) is a Sudanese-American poet and activist, who won the 2015 Individual World Poetry Slam championship. In 2018, she became UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, and in this capacity, has traveled to refugee camps in Kenya, Greece and Jordan, drawing wider attention to the situation of refugees. Early life Mahmoud was born in Darfur, Sudan, and moved with her family to Yemen, when she was a toddler. She then moved to the United States in 1998. When she was seven, she returned to Sudan, where her parents took part in a protest after the government stopped paying teachers. In January and February 2017, during protests against Executive Order 13769, thousands of people gathered at various airports in the United States and around the world to prevent the returning of refugees and other visitors from seven countries considered to be unsafe. According to various sources, more than two thousand people were at the protest at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York City with other protests appearing at significant international airports and other important sites around the United States.
