Amai Pakpak
Datu Akadir Akobar (died March 10, 1895), better known as Amai Pakpak, was a Maranao military leader who is noted for leading the Maranao resistance against Spanish colonization of the Lanao region in the 1890s. Background A Marawi native, Amai Pakpak maintained a fortification known as Fort Marawi (situated near modern-day Agus 2 hydroelectric dam) which defended the region from Spanish colonizers. While there were presumed to be many instances of Maranao resistance against the Spanish only battles involving Amai Pakpak were recorded; in 1891 against forces sent by Governor General Valeriano Weyler and in 1895 against forces sent by Governor General Ramón Blanco. In the first battle in 1891, Amai Pakpak and his forces held off a Spanish attack in Lanao and suffered heavy casualties. ''Datu'' is a title which denotes the rulers (variously described in historical accounts as chiefs, sovereign princes, and monarchs) of numerous indigenous peoples throughout the Philippine archipelago. Valeriano Weyler y Nicolau, 1st Duke of Rubí, 1st Marquess of Tenerife (17 September 1838 – 20 October 1930) was a Spanish general and colonial administrator who served as the Governor-General of the Philippines and Cuba, and later as Spanish Minister for War. Early life and career Weyler was born in 1838 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. His distant paternal ancestors were originally Prussians and served in the Spanish army for several generations. He was educated in his place of birth and in Granada. Weyler decided to enter the Spanish army, being influenced by his father, a military doctor. He graduated from the Infantry School of Toledo at the age of 16. At 20, Weyler had achieved the rank of lieutenant, and he was appointed the rank of captain in 1861. The Amai Pakpak Medical Center (APMC) is a government hospital in Marawi, Lanao del Sur, Philippines. History The hospital was established in 1903 by the US Army's 27th Infantry Cavalry Division led by Captain John J. Pershing in a land which was then known as Marahui which became known as Camp Keithley. In 1903, Captain James Ames organized it into a 25-bed hospital amidst a cholera outbreak which killed several US military personnel as well as locals. The health facility was later renamed as the Lanao General Hospital. It became widely known by locals by the name Public Hospital. The hospital went to the supervision of the Integrated Provincial Health Office of Lanao del Sur when the integration program of the health system of Lanao Province was launched in 1984.
