Amadeo (Austrian Record Label)
Amadeo Österreichische Schallplatten Ges.m.b.H. (Amadeo Austrian Records Limited) was an Austrian record label founded in 1956 and based in Vienna. "Ges.m.b.H." is an abbreviation for Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung, an Austrian Limited Liability Company. Acquisition by Polydor In June 1974, Polydor International purchased all the shares of the Amadeo Joint Stock Company, changing the companies configuration to Amadeo Ltd. Co. Stefan von Friedberg, then Amadeo's president, resigned and accepted a position as general manager of Ariola Schallplatten. Gerhard Gebhardt, who, at the time, had responsibility for all Austrian companies in the Polydor group, became the new general manager. Also, Franz Wallner, who had served as manager of exports and special disks at Phonodisc, became manager of marketing and sales. Polydor is part of Universal Music Group. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, complex chords, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in European harmony and African rhythmic rituals. Oscar Klein
Oscar Klein (5 January 1930 in Graz, Austria – 12 December 2006 in Baden-Württemberg) was an Austrian born jazz trumpeter who also played clarinet, harmonica, and swing guitar. His family fled the Nazis when he was young. He became known for "older jazz" like swing and Dixieland. In the early sixties he joined the famous Dutch Swing College Band in the Netherlands as first trumpeter and he is to be found on several of their recordings. He played with Lionel Hampton, Joe Zawinul, Jerry Ricks and others. Harald 'Harry' Neuwirth (born 2 February 1939) is an Austrian jazz pianist and composer. Life and career Born in Vienna, Neuwirth comes from a musical family; the composer Gösta Neuwirth is his brother, the composer Olga Neuwirth his daughter. Antonio Hans Cyrill Koller (12 February 1921 in Vienna – 21 December 2003 in Vienna) was an Austrian jazz tenor saxophonist and bandleader. Koller attended the University of Vienna from 1936 to 1939 and served in the armed forces from 1940 to 1946. Following World War II, he returned to Vienna and played with the Hot Club of Vienna; in 1950 he emigrated to Germany and formed a small ensemble there. Ruby Braff
Reuben "Ruby" Braff (March 16, 1927 – February 9, 2003) was an American jazz trumpeter and cornetist. Jack Teagarden was once asked about him on the Garry Moore television show and described Ruby as "the Ivy League Louis Armstrong". Braff was born in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. He was renowned for working in an idiom ultimately derived from the playing of Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke. He began playing in local clubs in the 1940s. In 1949, he was hired to play with the Edmond Hall Orchestra at the Savoy Cafe of Boston. He relocated to New York in 1953 where he was much in demand for band dates and recordings. He resided in Harwich, Massachusetts and died of complications from emphysema, heart failure, and glaucoma on February 9, 2003, in Chatham, Massachusetts. Victor Dickenson (August 6, 1906 – November 16, 1984) was an American jazz trombonist. His career began in the 1920s and continued through musical partnerships with Count Basie (1940–41), Sidney Bechet (1941), and Earl Hines. Freddy Martin
Frederick Alfred Martin (December 9, 1906 – September 30, 1983) was an American bandleader and tenor saxophonist. Early life Freddy Martin was born in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. Raised largely in an orphanage and by various relatives, Martin started out playing drums, then switched to C melody saxophone and subsequently tenor saxophone, the latter the one with which he would be identified. Early on, he had intended to become a journalist. He had hoped that he would earn enough money from his musical work to enter Ohio State University, but instead, he wound up becoming an accomplished musician. Martin led his own band while he was in high school, then played in various local bands. Georg Breinschmid (born 25 April 1973) is an Austrian double bass player. Biography Breinschmid studied classical double bass at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna and substituted in Viennese orchestras as a student. From 1994 to 1996 he played with the Tonkünstler Orchestra, then with the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic, touring Europe, America, and Asia. In 1999, Breinschmid quit classical music in favor of jazz. He played with the Vienna Art Orchestra, the Zipflo Weinrich Group, and gave concerts in ensembles throughout Europe.
