Alvalade (Santiago Do Cacém)
Alvalade, from the Arabical-balat is a parish in the municipality of Santiago do Cacém in the Setúbal District of Portugal. It also forms part of Alentejo Litoral. In the 2021 census it had 1803 inhabitants. History In 1801, Alvalade had 1,321 inhabitants. Until 1834, it was a county seat consisting of the parishes of Alvalade and Nossa Senhora do Roxo. It belonged, between 1834 and 1855, to the municipality of Messejana and, between 1855 and 1871, to the municipality of Aljustrel. In 1755 the town, in common with much of southern Portugal, suffered badly from the Lisbon Earthquake. In 1234 Alvalade can be considered to have definitively become Portuguese land after the invading Moors were defeated. In 1273 Alvalade was donated to the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword by Afonso III of Portugal. On 20 September 1510 King Manuel I granted a foral (town charter) to Alvalade. Estádio José Alvalade
Estádio José Alvalade is a football stadium in Lisbon, Portugal, home of Sporting Clube de Portugal. It was built adjacent to the site of the older stadium. The stadium is named after José Alvalade (1885–1918), the founder and first club member of Sporting CP in the early twentieth century. Origin The previous José Alvalade Stadium was opened on 10 June 1956. Plans by Sporting CP to modernize the club in the late 1990s coincided with the decision to award Portugal the right to host UEFA Euro 2004, and the decision was made to build a new stadium, with construction beginning on 15 January 2001. The club's statutes dictated that the stadium would be called Estádio José Alvalade. It would be the club's seventh stadium. Estádio José Alvalade was a multi-purpose stadium in Lisbon, Portugal. The stadium was able to hold 52,411 people. It was inaugurated on 10 June 1956. Home venue of Sporting CP for 47 years, it was mostly used for football matches, but also athletics. It was named after Sporting founder José Alfredo Holtreman Roquette, known as ''José Alvalade'' after his family. José Alvalade borrowed money from his grandfather, the Viscount of Alvalade, in order to fund Sporting. It was closed in 2003, when the new Estádio José Alvalade opened. Concerts During the 1990s, Estadio José Alvalade was one of the most prominent venue for rock concerts in Portugal, hosting tour dates of many high-profile international artists, including among many others, rock band Bon Jovi, Depeche Mode, U2, R.E.M., David Bowie, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd and Genesis.
