Alumni Center (Iowa State University)
The ISU Alumni Center (completed fall 2008) is a $11.2 million, facility, built to house the Iowa State University's Alumni Association and Student Alumni Leadership Council. Built near the Iowa State Center in Ames, Iowa, the Alumni Center serves as an enhancement to student life, alumni homecomings, and community and alumni engagement. The center was built using solely donations to the Alumni Association with Roy & Bobbi Reiman donating $9 million toward the building's construction. On the east side of the building sits a statue of Iowa State University's mascot Cy'. It was designed by Michael D'Ambrosi and is the only sculpture of the school's mascot on campus. Iowa State University
Iowa State University of Science and Technology (Iowa State University, Iowa State, or ISU) is a public land-grant research university in Ames, Iowa. Founded in 1858 as the Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm, Iowa State became one of the nation's first designated land-grant institution when the Iowa Legislature accepted the provisions of the 1862 Morrill Act on September 11, 1862, making Iowa the first state in the nation to do so. On July 4, 1959, the college was officially renamed Iowa State University of Science and Technology. Iowa State is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity". The university is home to the Ames Laboratory, one of ten national U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science research laboratories, the Biorenewables Research Laboratory, the Plant Sciences Institute, and various other research institutes. Iowa State Center
The Iowa State Center is located just southeast of Iowa State University's central campus in Ames, Iowa. It is a complex of cultural and athletic venues. The Center consists of the following: Hilton Coliseum, Stephens Auditorium, Fisher Theater, Scheman Building, and Jack Trice Stadium. Overview James Hilton (1899–1982), the 10th president of ISU, proposed the construction of an educational, cultural and athletic complex to faculty in 1954. In 1958 the ISU Foundation was formed with the primary goal of raising funds for the construction of the Iowa State Center. The ISU Foundation still exists and is currently working on raising $800 million in donations to be used in all aspects of the University. Ames () is a city in Story County, Iowa, United States, located approximately north of Des Moines in central Iowa. It is best known as the home of Iowa State University (ISU), with leading agriculture, design, engineering, and veterinary medicine colleges. Cy The Cardinal
Cy the Cardinal is the mascot of Iowa State University's sports teams. Because a cyclone was difficult to depict in costume, a cardinal was selected from the cardinal and gold of the official school colors. A cardinal-like bird was introduced at the 1954 homecoming pep rally. A contest was conducted to select a name for the mascot, and the winning entry of Cy was submitted by 17 people. The first to submit the name, Mrs. Wilma Ohlsen, won a cardinal and gold stadium blanket. Over the last half century, Cy has undergone several makeovers and redesigns.
