Althorpe Islands Conservation Park
Althorpe Islands Conservation Park is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia occupying the Althorpe Island, Haystack Island and Seal Island (Investigator Strait), Seal Island in Investigator Strait near the town of Stenhouse Bay, South Australia, Stenhouse Bay. The conservation park consists of the following land collectively known as the Althorpe Islands - Althorpe, Haystack and Seal Islands. Haystack and Seal Islands first acquired protected area status as a fauna conservation reserve declared on 16 March 1967 under the ''Crown Lands Act, 1929–1966''. On 27 April 1972, the fauna conservation reserve was reconstituted as the ''Althorpe Islands Conservation Park'' under the ''National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972''. Stenhouse Bay, South Australia
Stenhouse Bay is a place in the Australian state of South Australia near the south-west extremity of the Yorke Peninsula located in the gazetted locality of Inneston about west of the state capital of Adelaide. Naming Stenhouse Bay was named after Andrew Stenhouse who was a principal of the Permasite Manufacturing Co Pty Ltd which held "leases for the harvesting of gypsum north of Cape Spencer.” Since 1999, it has been located within the locality of Inneston. Its official status as of 2013 is that of a 'locality unbounded' which is listed on the South Australian place name gazetteer with the advice that it is "not to be used as an address". The Althorpe Islands are a group of islands in the Investigator Strait, off the south-western tip of Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. The group includes Althorpe Island and two rocky islets immediately to its west known as The Boobs. These are located 7.7 km south-southwest of Cape Spencer on the mainland. Haystack Island
Haystack Island is an island located in Investigator Strait off the south coast of Yorke Peninsula in the Australian state of South Australia about south-west of Stenhouse Bay. Since 1972, it has been part of the Althorpe Islands Conservation Park. Description Haystack Island is about south-west of Stenhouse Bay. It is described as ‘a narrow wall of sheer cliffs, undermined, indented and marked by fresh scars and rockfalls’ and that ‘has been eroded to a series of tall lobes connected by thin necks of rock that narrow to an almost knife-edge ridge’. Seal Island is an island located in Investigator Strait off the south coast of Yorke Peninsula in the Australian state of South Australia about south south-west of Stenhouse Bay. Investigator Strait
Investigator Strait is a body of water in South Australia lying between the Yorke Peninsula, on the Australian mainland, and Kangaroo Island. It was named by Matthew Flinders after his ship, HMS ''Investigator'', on his voyage of 1801–1802. It is bordered by the Gulf St Vincent in the northeast. Discovery and exploration It was named Investigator’s Strait by Flinders on Monday 29 March 1802. Extent Investigator Strait is bounded by Yorke Peninsula to its north and by Kangaroo Island to its south. The Register of the National Estate was a heritage register that listed natural and cultural heritage places in Australia that was closed in 2007.
