Altglienicke
Altglienicke (, literally ''Old Glienicke'') is a locality (''Ortsteil'') of Berlin in the borough (''Bezirk'') of Treptow-Köpenick. Until 2001 it was part of the former borough of Treptow. History The village of ''Glinik'' was first mentioned in 1375. The Berlin Wall cut through Altglienicke (in East Berlin) and Rudow (in West Berlin) from 1961 until 1990. It was also the location for a joint American and British intelligence operation, Operation Gold. Geography Position The locality is situated in the south-western side of Treptow-Köpenick. It borders with Rudow (in Neukölln), Johannisthal, Adlershof, Grünau, Bohnsdorf and the municipality of Schönefeld, in the Dahme-Spreewald district of Brandenburg. Altglienicke Railway Station
Altglienicke is a railway station on the Grünauer Kreuz–Berlin Brandenburg Airport railway in the Treptow-Köpenick district of Berlin. It is served by S-Bahn lines S45 and S9. It opened for passenger service in 1962, but existed as an operational station on the Berlin Outer Freight Ring since 1940. History On 1 January 1940, the station was initially opened as a pure operational station on the Berlin Outer Freight Ring. Until 1948, no passenger service stopped here; a halt was opened on 26 July of that year, and was operational until 21 March 1951. The second operating period lasted between 22 May 1955 and 1 June 1958. Since 1959, it was planned to open an S-Bahn line in the direction of Berlin Schönefeld Airport. Since a motorway junction was planned near the station, the route runs south of the station in a slight arc on the left hand side of the highway section. Operation Gold
Operation Gold (also known as Operation Stopwatch by the British) was a joint operation conducted by the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the British MI6 Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) in the 1950s to tap into landline communication of the Soviet Army headquarters in Berlin using a tunnel into the Soviet-occupied zone. This was a much more complex variation of the earlier Operation Silver project in Vienna. The plan was activated in 1954 because of fears that the Soviets might be launching a nuclear attack at any time, having already detonated a hydrogen bomb in August 1953 as part of the Soviet atomic bomb project. Construction of the tunnel began in September 1954 and was completed in eight months. The Americans wanted to hear any warlike intentions being discussed by their military and were able to listen to telephone conversations for nearly a year, eventually recording roughly 90,000 communications. Berlin S-Bahn
The Berlin S-Bahn () is a rapid transit railway system in and around Berlin, the capital city of Germany. It has been in operation under this name since December 1930, having been previously called the special tariff area ''Berliner Stadt-, Ring- und Vorortbahnen'' (Berlin city, orbital, and suburban railways). It complements the Berlin U-Bahn and is the link to many outer-Berlin areas, such as Berlin Brandenburg Airport. Schönefeld (meaning ''beautiful field'') is a suburban municipality in the Dahme-Spreewald district, Brandenburg, Germany. It borders the southeastern districts of Berlin. Johannisthal (Berlin)
Johannisthal () is a German locality (''Ortsteil'') within the Berlin borough (''Bezirk'') of Treptow-Köpenick. Until 2001 it was part of the former borough of Treptow. History The first mention of the locality dates from November 16, 1753. In 1880 it was served by a train station on the '' Berlin-Görlitzer Eisenbahn'' and in 1884 it was awarded by the title of ''Bad'' ( bath), becoming ''Bad Johannisthal''. Bohnsdorf () is a district in the borough Treptow-Köpenick of Berlin, Germany. It is located in the south-east of the city. History The locality was first mentioned in 1375 with the name of ''Benistorp''. Geography Position The locality is situated in the southeastern suburb of Berlin and borders with Altglienicke, Grünau, and with the municipality of Schönefeld, in the Brandenburg district of Dahme-Spreewald. Rudow () is a locality (''Ortsteil'') within the Berlin borough (''Bezirk'') of Neukölln. History The village was founded in 1373. Until 1920 it was a municipality of the former Teltow district, merged into Berlin with the "Greater Berlin Act". Due to its position at the borders of West Berlin with East Berlin and Brandenburg, 3/4 of its boundaries were crossed by the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989. Geography Rudow is located in the southern suburb of Berlin, at the boundary with the Brandenburger municipality of Schönefeld, in the district of Dahme-Spreewald.
