Altay Krai
Altai Krai (russian: Алта́йский край, r=Altaysky kray, p=ɐlˈtajskʲɪj kraj) is a federal subject of Russia (a krai). It borders clockwise from the west, Kazakhstan (East Kazakhstan Region and Pavlodar Region), Novosibirsk and Kemerovo Oblasts, and the Altai Republic. The krai's administrative centre is the city of Barnaul. As of the 2010 Census, the population of the krai was 2,419,755. Name The region is named after the Altai mountains. In Russian, Altai Krai means the Altai region. Geography Altai Krai has rolling foothills, grasslands, lakes, rivers, and mountains. The highest point of the krai is high Mayak Shangina. The climate is severe with long cold dry winters and hot, usually dry summers. The region's main waterway is the Ob River, which gives its name to the Ob Plateau. Bolshoye Topolnoye
Bolshoye Topolnoye (russian: Большое Топольное), meaning "big poplar", is a lake in the southern part of the West Siberian Plain, Altai Krai, south-central Russia.Google Earth Its waters are slightly saline. There are no settlements by the lake. The nearest inhabited places are Petrovka and Mikhailovka. The water level of the lake is subject to variations. In snowy or rainy years, its surface area may reach , but in periods of drought the lake may dry up becoming covered with grass and residual swamps. Lake Kuchuk
Lake Kuchuk or Kuchukskoye (russian: Кучукское озеро) is a bittern salt lake in the southern part of the West Siberian Plain, Blagoveshchensky District, Altai Krai, south-central Russia. Its waters are briny, containing sodium sulphate. The northern end of the lake is connected by a channel with Lake Kulunda to the north. Geography Lake Kuchuk is the second largest lake in Altai Krai. Lake Kulunda
Lake Kulunda or Kulundinskoye (russian: Кулундинское озеро) is a lake in the southern part of the West Siberian Plain, Altai Krai, south-central Russia. The Kulunda and Suetka rivers flow into the lake, which is connected by a channel with Lake Kuchuk to the south. Mayak Shangina (russian: link=no, Маяк Шангина) is a mountain in Altai Krai, Russia. At it is the highest point of Altai Krai. The summit was formerly unnamed. The choosing of the name followed a 2011 initiative of local paper Altayskaya Pravda journalist Anatoly Muravlev, who came up with the idea to give the peak an official name on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Altai Territory. The name Mayak Shangina honors ethnographer, geologist and botanist Peter Shangin (1741 - 1816) and it was ratified and officially adopted in 2013.
