Altamira, Puerto Plata
Altamira is a town in the Puerto Plata Province of the Dominican Republic. The town's name is the subject of at least two different origin traditions. One asserts that when Christopher Columbus first arrived in the area, he took note of the height of the mountains and exclaimed: "Look at the heights." Another reports that the name is based on the geographical resemblance of the region to Spain's Cave of Altamira, Altamira Caves. On October 29, 1889, President Ulises Heureaux declared the town a municipality. To this day, October 29th is celebrated in Altamira with municipal festivities. Wilfrido Radamés Vargas Martínez (; born April 24, 1949 in Altamira, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic) is a band leader, trumpeter, vocalist, arranger, composer and producer who was instrumental in making the merengue style a worldwide phenomenon. He was surrounded by musical influences; namely, his father Ramón, an accordionist and guitarist, and his mother Bienvenida, a flute player and guitarist. Cy Young Award
The Cy Young Award is given annually to the best pitchers in Major League Baseball (MLB), one each for the American League (AL) and National League (NL). The award was first introduced in 1956 by Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick in honor of Hall of Fame pitcher Cy Young, who died in 1955. The award was originally given to the single best pitcher in the major leagues, but in 1967, after the retirement of Frick, the award was given to one pitcher in each league. Guananico is a town in the Dominican Republic, situated in the Puerto Plata Province. It has an area of and a population of 8,954 of which 3,025 live in the urban part and 5,929 in the rural part.
