Alsten Island
Alsta (historically, ''Alsten'' or ''Alstein'') is an island in the municipalities of Alstahaug and Leirfjord in Nordland county, Norway. The island is surrounded by the Vefsnfjorden to the east, the Leirfjorden to the north, and the Alstenfjorden to the south and west. The eastern part of the island is dominated by the Seven Sisters mountain range which has five mountains that are more than tall, while the western part of the island is relatively flat and it is the location of the town of Sandnessjøen and the village of Søvika in the south. The long island has an area of , and its highest point is the mountain Botnkrona, which reaches above sea level. In 2017, there were 6,969 residents on the island. The islands of Altra and Skålvær lie to the southwest, the islands of Tjøtta, Offersøya, Mindlandet, and Rødøya lie to the south, surrounding the entrance to the Vefsnfjorden. Nordland
Nordland (; smj, Nordlánnda, sma, Nordlaante, sme, Nordlánda, en, Northland) is a county in Norway in the Northern Norway region, the least populous of all 11 counties, bordering Troms og Finnmark in the north, Trøndelag in the south, Norrbotten County in Sweden to the east, Västerbotten County to the south-east, and the Atlantic Ocean (Norwegian Sea) to the west. Skålvær
Skålvær are a group of islands in the municipality of Alstahaug in Nordland county, Norway. The islands are located in the western part of Alstahaug, about northwest of the island of Tjøtta, just west of the southern tip of the island of Altra, and about south of the village of Silvalen (in Herøy Municipality). The islands were formerly a part of Vega Municipality, but in 1971 it was transferred to Alstahaug. Skålvær was once a thriving trading post and had many residents, but it has since declined in importance. Today, much of Skålvær is an outdoor recreation area for Alstahaug municipality. In addition, there are about fifteen private houses and cottages scattered around the main island. Since 2007, there are no longer any permanent residents on Skålvær, but the place is far from abandoned. Kunnskapsforlaget () is a Norwegian publishing company based in Oslo. Kunnskapsforlaget was established in 1975, as a partnership between H. Aschehoug & Co. (W. Nygaard) and Gyldendal Norsk Forlag. The purpose was to co-operate on publishing encyclopaedias and dictionaries. The first volume of Store norske leksikon (SNL) was published in 1978. Sundøy
Sundøy or Sundøya is a village in the municipality of Leirfjord in Nordland county, Norway. The village is located about south of the village of Leland. Sundøya has a population of about 120 people. It is located on the north side of the Vefsnfjorden on the northeastern part of the island of Alsta, east of the Seven Sisters mountains, which isolate it from the rest of the island. Since Sundøy is surrounded by mountains and water, it was only accessible by boat until 2003 when the Sundøy Bridge was built, providing a road connection to the mainland of Leirfjord Leirfjord is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. Sundøy Bridge
The Sundøy Bridge ( no, Sundøybrua) is a cantilever bridge in the municipality of Leirfjord in Nordland county, Norway. The concrete bridge connects the mainland to the village of Sundøy on the island of Alsta. The bridge has three spans, with the main span being long. The maximum clearance to the sea is . The Sundøy Bridge was opened on 9 August 2003. It was designed by Jan-Eirik Nilsskog. The bridge cost . The decision to spend such an amount of money on a bridge to a place with less than 150 inhabitants was disputed. However, Sundøy did not get connected to the mainland when the rest of Alsten did, following the opening of the Helgeland Bridge in 1991. Norwegian County Road 17
County Road 17 ( no, Fylkesvei 17), also known as the Coastal Highway ( no, Kystriksveien), is a Norwegian highway that runs from the town of Bodø in Nordland county (in the north) to the town of Steinkjer in Trøndelag county (in the south). It is long and includes six ferry crossings. The road runs along the coast of Nordland and Trøndelag counties through 28 different municipalities. This road is a much more scenic, albeit longer and more time-consuming, route than the inland European Route E6 highway. Prior to 1 January 2010, this was National Road 17 ( no, Riksvei 17), but control and maintenance of the road was transferred to the counties from the national government on that date, so now it is a county road. Rødøya is an island in the municipality of Rødøy in Nordland county, Norway. The island is located just west of the mouth of the Tjongsfjorden, north of the island of Gjerdøya, and west of the mainland. There are ferry connections from the village of Rødøy to the village of Jektvika on the mainland and to the nearby island of Gjerdøya. Mindlandet
Mindlandet is an island in Alstahaug Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The island lies at the mouth of the Vefsnfjorden, just south of the islands of Tjøtta and Rødøya. The island is fairly flat, and has a lot of very good agricultural land. The island is only accessible by boat and there are car ferry connections to the villages of Stokka and Forvika on the mainland in Vevelstad Municipality. There are also ferry connections to the nearby islands of Rødøya (to the northeast) and Tjøtta (to the northwest). The ferry service from Vevelstad-Rødøya-Mindlandet-Tjøtta is included as part of the Norwegian County Road 17, a main highway on the Helgeland coast. Offersøya or Offersøy is an island in Alstahaug Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The island lies directly between the large island of Alsta and the smaller island of Tjøtta at the mouth of the Vefsnfjorden. Tjøtta (island)
Tjøtta is an island in Alstahaug Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The island lies at the entrance to the Vefsnfjorden, just south of the island of Alsta. The U-shaped island is relatively flat, and the highest point is the tall Kalvberghaugen, just east of the village of Tjøtta. The island has two main villages on it: Tjøtta and Svinnes. The Norwegian County Road 17 crosses the island and it connects it to the neighboring islands of Offersøya and Alsta by two causeways. History Tjøtta has one of the largest and oldest Iron Age farms in Northern Norway, and hardly any places in the region have this many historical relics preserved in one limited area.
