Alpujarra Granadina is a Spanish comarca in the Province of Granada. Along with Alpujarra Almeriense, it forms the historical region of the Alpujarras. Overview Located in the west of the Alpujarras, it borders the Granadan comarcas of Accitania (Guadix) to the north, the Vega de Granada to the northwest, the Valle de Lecrín to the west, and the Costa Tropical to the south, as well as the Almerían comarcas of Poniente Almeriense to the southeast and the Alpujarra Almeriense to the east. In Spain, a ''comarca'' (, sing. ''comarca'') is either a traditional territorial division without any formal basis, or a group of municipalities, legally defined by an autonomous community for the purpose of providing common local government services. In English, a comarca is equivalent to a district, county, area or zone. Legally defined comarcas The large majority of legally defined comarcas are in Catalonia (42) and Aragon (33)), and are regulated by law and are governed by a comarcal council with specified powers. Cáñar
Cáñar is a small village in the Alpujarras comarca of the province of Granada in Spain. It is located a few kilometres north of the road from Órgiva to Pampaneira and the high Alpujarras. The GR 7 long-distance footpath, following the ancient highway through the Alpujarras, runs through the village. The area of the municipality is 26 km²., and it is located at a height of 1014 metres above sea level. Its population in 2005 was estimated as 366 people, of whom 69 were not Spanish citizens, most of these being citizens of other European Union countries. The village has few facilities for tourists other than a handful of bars, and is of a very traditional Alpujarran character, with animal stabling integrated into houses that open onto the main street and square. The villagers are extremely welcoming and celebrate all the major festivals enthusiastically. Bubión
Bubión is a village in Alpujarras, Las Alpujarras region of Province of Granada, Granada in Spain. It is located at latitude 36° 57' N, longitude 3° 21' W, at 1,350 metres above sea level. Its postal code is 18412. Together with Capileira (to the north) and Pampaneira (to the south) it has become a focus for the tourism, tourist trade in La Alpujarra, because of the spectacular location of the three villages on the gorge of the Río Poqueira and below the peaks of the Sierra Nevada (Spain), Sierra Nevada. Bérchules
Bérchules is a village and municipality in the central Alpujarra, in the province of Granada in Spain. The origins of the village are Arab. There are two villages in the municipality, Bérchules (36° 58' north and 3° 11' east, elevation 1350 metres), and Alcútar (36° 58' north and 3° 11' east, elevation 1250 metres). The villages are on the road, Órgiva-Trevélez-Ugíjar, and their population is estimated at 900 and 300 respectively. The river Grande de Los Bérchules flows past the village on its course from the Sierra Nevada to the Mediterranean at Motril. En route it becomes renamed Rio "Gualdalfeo" and is the main river in the Alpujarra. Like the surrounding area, in general the present population has declined since the mid 20th century when the population was probably nearer to 5,000 inhabitants. Alpujarra de la Sierra is a municipality located in the province of Granada, Spain. According to the 2007 census (INE), the city has a population of 1168 inhabitants. History It was formed by the union in 1971 of Mecina Bombarón and Yegen, and is situated in the central-northern area of La Alpujarra ( Granada), 108 km from the provincial capital, in the south-east of Spain. Almegíjar
Almegíjar is a Spanish village and municipality located in the province of Granada, Andalusia. According to the 2005 census (INE), it has a population of 435 inhabitants. Overview It is situated at over 800 metres above sea level, on the southern slopes of the Sierra Morena, a spur of Mulhacen, the highest mountain in Spain. Before the Spanish Civil War in 1935, the church was burned by anarchists and during the war it was just behind the republican front lines; the remains of trenches can still be seen up the mountain. These trenches represents the furthest advance of the Fascists into Las Alpujarras after they took Granada. The people of the village still largely work on the land, often using mules. There are many olive groves (and an olive oil processing factory), almonds, oranges and lemons, along with vegetable gardens. Poniente Almeriense
Poniente Almeriense is a ''comarca'' in Almería, Spain. It is sometimes also known as the "sea of plastic" (''Mar de plástico'') due to the numerous greenhouses that cover the area. The ''comarca'' contains ten municipalities (the tenth, Balanegra, was created in 2015 from part of Berja municipality) and 259,357 inhabitants in an area of 971 km2. The "sea of plastic" was one of the subjects of '' We feed the world'', a 2005 documentary; and the setting of Spanish crime drama ''Mar de plástico''.
