The event was held on February 23 at Deer Valley. Pre-race favorite Bode Miller fell off the course in the second run, and many of the other top competitors struggled with an extremely challenging course. Alain Baxter of Great Britain originally took the bronze, but was disqualified after testing positive for traces of methamphetamine. This apparently occurred because Baxter had used a Vicks inhaler from Canada, which had a slightly different chemical content from the legal British Vicks inhaler. Ole Kristian Furuseth (born 7 January 1967) is a retired Norwegian Alpine skiing, alpine skier. He scored his first Alpine Skiing World Cup, World Cup victory in Furano Ski Resort, Furano in 1989 and his final World Cup victory in Bormio in 2000, and in total he has three World Cup victories in giant slalom and six in Slalom skiing, slalom. Thomas Grandi (born 27 December 1972 in Bolzano, Italy) is a Canadian retired alpine skier. He specialized in technical skiing giant slalom and slalom. Skiing career Grandi started in the Alpine Skiing World Cup in the 1992-93 season. His first top ten finish in the World Cup came in December 1996 where he finished in 10th position in the Giant Slalom in Alta Badia, Italy. Stanley Hayer ( cs, Stanislav Hujer, born July 19, 1973 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian freestyle skier of Czech descent who currently resides in Kimberley, British Columbia. Stanley Hayer is a member of the Canadian national ski cross team. Hayer moved over to the Czech Republic to ski with their team in the early part of the 2000s after disagreements with the Canadian National program. Michael von Grünigen (born 11 April 1969) is a Swiss former alpine skier. He is considered to be the most successful Giant Slalom skier of his era: In 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2003, he won the World Cup in Giant Slalom. In 1997 and 2001, he was World Champion in Giant Slalom. He took a total of 23 World Cup wins during his career. Erik Schlopy (born August 21, 1972) is former World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States. Born in Buffalo, New York and raised in Hamburg, New York, he competed in three Olympics: 1994, 2002, and 2006. At the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, he placed 34th in Giant Slalom. At the 2002 Olympics, he placed 14th in Slalom, and at the 2006 Olympic Games, he placed 13th in Giant Slalom. He also won a bronze medal in the Giant Slalom at the 2003 World Championships.
