The men's giant slalom at the 1956 Winter Olympics was held on 29 January on Mount Faloria, outside Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. The course on the Ilio Colli run was in length, with a vertical drop of . There were 71 gates for the men to navigate on the course. Ninety-five men from twenty-nine countries entered the race though eight were disqualified. Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the pastime of sliding down snow-covered slopes on skis with fixed-heel bindings, unlike other types of skiing ( cross-country, Telemark, or ski jumping), which use skis with free-heel bindings. Asle Sjåstad
Asle Sjåstad (6 January 1930 – 22 May 2009) was a Norwegian alpine skier. He took eight national championships between 1955 and 1960, representing the club Geilo IL. He finished fifth at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1956, and at the 1956 Winter Olympics he acquired a fourteenth place in the downhill event, a 22nd place in the giant slalom event and an eighteenth place in the slalom event. Wallace Werner
Wallace Jerold "Buddy" Werner (February 26, 1936 – April 12, 1964) was an American alpine ski racer in the 1950s and early 1960s. Early years Born and raised in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Werner was the middle child of Ed "Pop" and Hazel Mae "Hazie" Werner. He and his siblings were accomplished skiers, and competed in both alpine and Nordic events on Howelsen Hill. Werner raced for the University of Colorado in the mid-1950s, making the 1956 Olympic team in his sophomore year, joining his elder sister, Skeeter Werner. Ski racing Werner was selected for the U.S. Olympic Team three times: 1956, 1960, and 1964. Stig Oskar Sollander (25 June 1926 – 12 December 2019) was a Swedish alpine skier who competed in the 1948, 1952 and 1956 Winter Olympics.
