Alphonse Couturier (Union Nationale Politician)
Alphonse Couturier (12 February 1885 – 11 July 1973) was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for the Union Nationale. He owned a sawmill in Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha!, Quebec from 1909 to 1936, and was mayor of that town from 1931 to 1936. He was mayor of Marsoui, Quebec from 1950 to 1960. He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in the 1952 Quebec general election for the Union Nationale in the Gaspé-Nord electoral district. He was re-elected in 1956, but was defeated in 1960 It is also known as the "Year of Africa" because of major events—particularly the independence of seventeen African nations—that focused global attention on the continent and intensified feelings of Pan-Africanism. Legislative Assembly Of Quebec
The Legislative Assembly of Quebec (French: ''Assemblée législative du Québec'') was the name of the lower house of Quebec's legislature from 1867 to December 31, 1968, when it was renamed the National Assembly of Quebec. At the same time, the upper house of the legislature, the Legislative Council, was abolished. Both were initially created by the Constitution Act, 1867. It was the Union Nationale government of Premier Jean-Jacques Bertrand that passed the "Bill 90" legislation to abolish the upper house, but earlier attempts had been made by earlier governments. The presiding officer of the Assembly was known in French as ''orateur'', a literal translation of the English term, ''speaker''. When the Assembly was renamed so too was the title of its presiding officer, becoming known as the President. Today, Quebec has a unicameral legislature, whose single house is the National Assembly. It was created during the Great Depression and held power in Quebec from 1936 to 1939, and from 1944 to 1960 and from 1966 to 1970. Saint-Louis-du-Ha! Ha! () is a parish municipality in the Témiscouata Regional County Municipality of the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec. The population is 1,318. Its economy is mainly agricultural. It is located southeast of Rivière-du-Loup and west of Cabano along the Trans-Canada Highway ( Route 185), about halfway to Edmundston in New Brunswick. History The parish began in 1860 as the site of a Roman Catholic mission; it was named in 1874. Marsoui, Quebec
Marsoui is a village municipality in the Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine region of Quebec, Canada. The name Marsoui is thought to originate from the Mi'kmaq word ''malseoui'', meaning "flint" which is abundant in the area. However, another theory explains that it comes from the French word ''marsouin'', the vernacular term for porpoise or beluga whale that used to be present in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in large numbers. Alternate spellings used over time were ''Marsouis, Marsoin'', and ''Marsouins''. The 1952 Quebec general election was held on July 16, 1952, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Quebec, Canada. The incumbent '' Union Nationale'', led by Maurice Duplessis, won re-election, defeating the Quebec Liberal Party, led by Georges-Émile Lapalme. This was the fourth time (and the third in a row) that Duplessis led his party to a general election victory. 1956 Quebec General Election
The 1956 Quebec general election was held on June 20, 1956, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, Canada. The incumbent Union Nationale, led by Maurice Duplessis, won re-election, defeating the Quebec Liberal Party, led by Georges-Émile Lapalme. This was the fifth and final time (and the fourth in a row) that Duplessis led his party to a general election victory. No party has since been able to win more than three elections in a row. Duplessis died in office in 1959. It was Lapalme's second (and final) loss in a row as Liberal leader. The Liberals did not manage to improve on their performance in the previous 1952 election. 1960 Quebec General Election
The 1960 Quebec general election was held on June 22, 1960, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, Canada. It was one of the most significant elections in Quebec history, rivalled perhaps only by the 1976 general election. The incumbent Union Nationale, led by Antonio Barrette, was defeated by the Quebec Liberal Party, led by Jean Lesage. The 1960 election set the stage for the Quiet Revolution, a major social transformation of all aspects of Quebec society throughout the 1960s. Among many other changes, the influence and power of the Catholic Church fell sharply as Quebec became a secular society. This election put an end to 16 years of continuous Union Nationale rule, much of it under Maurice Duplessis.
