Alphaeus Patterson
Alphaeus Patterson (March 15, 1856 – November 4, 1931) was a politician and businessman from Alberta, Canada. He was born in Kemptville, Ontario. Business Patterson founded a company with William Rae known as The Argonaut Company Ltd. in 1909 Patterson became President and Rae became the secretary-treasure. The company was primarily responsible for developing the site on Bear Creek that became modern Grande Prairie. In 1911 Patterson erected the first Store building in Grande Prairie the business was known as Paterson & Son as he ran the store and a post office from the same building with his son Jack O. Patterson. Politics Patterson was elected to the Alberta Legislature in the 1913 Alberta general election. Kemptville, Ontario
Kemptville is a community located in the Municipality of North Grenville in Eastern Ontario, Canada in the northernmost part of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. It is located approximately south of the downtown core of Ottawa and south of the Rideau River. The community can be accessed by Highway 416, also known as the Veterans Memorial Highway, which was completed in 1999, and from Leeds and Grenville Road 43 (formerly Highway 43). Grande Prairie is a city in northwest Alberta, Canada within the southern portion of an area known as Peace River Country. It is located at the intersection of Highway 43 (part of the CANAMEX Corridor) and Highway 40 (the Bighorn Highway), approximately northwest of Edmonton. The city is surrounded by the County of Grande Prairie No. 1. James Cornwall
Lieutenant-Colonel James Kennedy "Peace River Jim" Cornwall (October 29, 1869 – November 20, 1955) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1909 to 1913 sitting with the Liberal caucus in government. Business career Cornwall was a founding member of the Northern Transportation Company which grew out of the Northern Traders Company. He served as the company's first President. The company operated fleets of steamboats and barge-towing tugboats on the Mackenzie River system. Political career Cornwall ran as a provincial Liberal candidate in the 1905 Alberta general election in the Peace River electoral district. He faced independent candidate Lucien Dubuc but was defeated by an unknown number of votes despite being favoured to win. William Bredin
William Fletcher Bredin (1862 – 1942) was a Canadian pioneer businessman and politician. He intermittently farmed and operated businesses in the Canadian West and then served as MLA in the Alberta Legislature. Born in Stormont County, Ontario,Davis 95 he went west to Winnipeg where he farmed with his father near Winnipeg. He moved to the U.S. and provided railway ties to the Northern Pacific Railway. Liver-Eating Johnson advised him to join his brother who was farming in Edmonton. In 1882 he went north on the Whoop-up Trail to Calgary then north on the Calgary-Edmonton Trail to Edmonton, arriving shortly after his brother died. He took over the homestead and was joined by his father. He spent some time in Calgary working in a coal mine and settled at Red Deer Crossing in 1883, where he took over a claim from Esias Myers. 1913 Alberta General Election
The 1913 Alberta general election was held in March 1913. The writ was dropped on 25 March 1913 and election day was held 17 April 1913 to elect 56 members to the 3rd Alberta Legislature. Elections in two northern districts took place on 30 July 1913 to compensate for the remote location of the riding. The method to elect members was under the First Past the Post voting system with the exception of the Edmonton district which returned two members under a plurality block vote. The election was unusual with the writ period for the general election being a very short period of 23 days. Premier Arthur Sifton led the Alberta Liberal Party into his first election as leader, after taking over from Alexander Rutherford. Premier Rutherford had resigned for his government's involvement in the Alberta and Great Waterways Railway Scandal but remained a sitting member. William Archibald Rae
William Archibald Rae (May 3, 1875 – May 5, 1943) was a businessman and provincial level politician from Alberta, Canada. He was born in Thedford, Ontario. Argonaut Company Rae was instrumental in the founding of Grande Prairie, Alberta with his work as secretary-treasure in The Argonaut Company Ltd. The company bought and subdivided land that became the city. He founded the company with his business partner Alphaeus Patterson. Political career Rae ran for a seat in the Alberta Legislature for the first time in the 1913 Alberta general election. He was defeated by his former business partner Alphaeus Patterson in a closely contested three-way race. Patterson retired at the end of his term and Rae ran for the second time in the 1917 Alberta general election, this time winning the Peace River district by a large margin.
