Alpha Oumar Konaré
Alpha Oumar Konaré (born 2 February 1946) is a Malian politician, who served as President of Mali for two five-year terms from 1992 to 2002 and was Chairperson of the African Union Commission from 2003 to 2008. Scholarly career Alpha Oumar Konaré, fourth son of a Fula homemaker, was born in Kayes, Mali, where he went to primary school. He went on to attend Bamako's ''Lycée Terrasson des Fougères'', the ''Collège de Maristes'' of Dakar, Senegal, the ''Collège Moderne'' of Kayes and, between 1962 and 1964, the ''École Normale Secondaire'' of Katibougou. He completed his advanced studies in history at the ''École Normale Supérieure'' in Bamako (1965–1969) and at the University of Warsaw between 1971 and 1975. He began his professional career as a tutor in Kayes, then a lycée teacher at Markala and Bamako. Gertrude Ibengwe Mongella ( Makanza; born 13 September 1945) is a Tanzanian politician who is the first president of the Pan-African Parliament. Early life and work Mongella was born in 1945 on Ukerewe Island. In 1970, President Mongella graduated from the University of East Africa in Dar es Salaam. For four years she was a tutor at Dar es Salaam Teachers Training College. In 1974, she became curriculum developer for the Dar es Salaam Institutes of Education, which she did until 1978. From 1977-92, President Mongella was a Member of the Central Committee and National Executive Committee of the CCM party. The Malian Party of Labour (French: ''Parti malien du travail'', PMT) is a Marxist-Leninist party in Mali and a member of the coalition supporting the Alliance for Democracy in Mali of president Amadou Toumani Touré. Moussa Traoré
Moussa Traoré (25 September 1936 – 15 September 2020) was a Malian soldier, politician, and dictator who was President of Mali from 1968 to 1991. As a Lieutenant, he led the military ousting of President Modibo Keïta in 1968. Thereafter he served as head of state until March 1991, when he was overthrown by popular protests and a military coup. He was twice condemned to death in the 1990s, but eventually pardoned on both occasions and freed in 2002. He retired from public life and died in 2020. Early life Born in Kayes Region, Traoré studied at Kita and at the military academy in Fréjus, France. He returned to Mali in 1960, after its 1959 independence. Modibo Keïta
Modibo Keïta (4 June 1915 – 16 May 1977) was the first President of Mali (1960–1968) and the Prime Minister of the Mali Federation. He espoused a form of African socialism. Youth Keïta was born in Bamako-Coura, a neighborhood of Bamako, which was at the time the capital of French Sudan. His family were Malian Muslims who claimed direct descent from the Keita dynasty, the founders of the medieval Mali Empire. His nickname after primary schooling was Modo.
