Alpha Centauri
Alpha Centauri ( Latinized from α Centauri and often abbreviated Alpha Cen or α Cen) is a triple star system in the constellation of Centaurus. It consists of 3 stars: Alpha Centauri A (officially Rigil Kentaurus), Alpha Centauri B (officially Toliman) and Alpha Centauri C (officially Proxima Centauri). Proxima Centauri is also the closest star to the Sun at 4.2465 light-years (1.3020 pc). Alpha Centauri A and B are Sun-like stars ( Class G and K, respectively), and together they form the binary star system Alpha Centauri AB. To the naked eye, the two main components appear to be a single star with an apparent magnitude of −0.27. It is the brightest star in the constellation and the third-brightest in the night sky, outshone only by Sirius and Canopus. Alpha Centauri A has 1.1 times the mass and 1.5 times the luminosity of the Sun, while Alpha Centauri B is smaller and cooler, at 0.9 times the Sun's mass and less than 0.5 times its luminosity. The pair or ...

Proxima Centauri
Proxima Centauri is a small, low-mass star located away from the Sun in the southern constellation of Centaurus. Its Latin name means the 'nearest tarof Centaurus'. It was discovered in 1915 by Robert Innes and is the nearest-known star to the Sun. With a quiescent apparent magnitude of 11.13, it is too faint to be seen with the unaided eye. Proxima Centauri is a member of the Alpha Centauri star system, being identified as component Alpha Centauri C, and is 2.18° to the southwest of the Alpha Centauri AB pair. It is currently from AB, which it orbits with a period of about 550,000 years. Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf star with a mass about 12.5% of the Sun's mass (), and average density about 33 times that of the Sun. Because of Proxima Centauri's proximity to Earth, its angular diameter can be measured directly. Its actual diameter is about one-seventh (14%) the diameter of the Sun. Although it has a very low average luminosity, Pro ...

Alpha Centauri (Doctor Who)
Alpha Centauri, played on-camera by Stuart Fell and voiced by Ysanne Churchman, is a fictional alien delegate for the Galactic Federation in the BBC One television series ''Doctor Who''. The character appeared in two serials during the Third Doctor era in the early 1970s, before making a surprise cameo towards the end of "Empress of Mars" in 2017. Character traits Alpha Centauri is a hermaphroditic hexapod from Alpha Centauri and, being effectively genderless is referred to as "it" as opposed to "he" or "she". It is tall, green, has one large blue/green/hazel/brown eye, six arms and a high-pitched voice, wears a long yellow cape and walks with a nervous gait. It is prone to cowardice and hysterics. It has a low opinion of Earth, describing it as a "'remote and unattractive" planet, but regrets that its appearance can frighten humans. It regards females as unimportant. Alpha Centauri is also the name of Alpha Centauri's native star system. The Alpha Centauri binary star syste ...

Alpha Centauri (horse)
Alpha Centauri (foaled 28 February 2015) is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. In 2018 she recorded four consecutive Group 1 races, namely the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes, Falmouth Stakes and Prix Jacques Le Marois. Background Alpha Centauri is a "massive" grey mare bred in Ireland by the Niarchos family. She was sent into training with Jessica Harrington at Moone, in County Kildare. She was ridden in all of her races by Colm O'Donoghue. Her sire Mastercraftsman, from whom she inherited her colour, was a top class performer whose wins included the Phoenix Stakes, National Stakes, Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes. As a breeding stallion, his other offspring include Kingston Hill, Amazing Maria and The Grey Gatsby. Her dam Alpha Lupi was unraced, but came from a very successful female bloodline which has been in the ownership of the Niarchos family for several generations: she was a daughter of East of the Moon who was in turn a daughter of Miesque. ...

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
''Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri'' is a 4X video game, considered a spiritual sequel to the ''Civilization'' series. Set in a science fiction depiction of the 22nd century, the game begins as seven competing ideological factions land on the planet Chiron ("Planet") in the Alpha Centauri star system. As the game progresses, Planet's growing sentience becomes a formidable obstacle to the human colonists. Sid Meier, designer of ''Civilization'', and Brian Reynolds, designer of '' Civilization II'', developed ''Alpha Centauri'' after they left MicroProse to join with Jeff Briggs in creating a new video game developer: Firaxis Games. Electronic Arts released both ''Alpha Centauri'' and its expansion, ''Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire'', in 1999. The following year, Aspyr Media ported both titles to Classic Mac OS while Loki Software ported them to Linux. ''Alpha Centauri'' features improvements on ''Civilization II''s game engine, including simultaneous multiplay, social engineering, clima ...

Alpha Centauri (album)
''Alpha Centauri'' is the second studio album by German electronic music group Tangerine Dream. It was released in March 1971 by record label Ohr. Content The music on this album is quite different from Tangerine Dream's first album ''Electronic Meditation'', partly because of a heavier reliance on keyboards and electronic technology, although they still mostly remain in the background: the dominant instruments on the album are organ and flute. The other difference is that this album focuses on dark, spacey soundscapes as opposed to jam sessions. The shift in instrumentation resulted in an atmosphere dubbed by Edgar Froese himself as "kosmische musik". Julian Cope's Head Heritage wrote that the album "used the space rock template from /nowiki>Pink_Floyd's.html"_;"title="Pink_Floyd.html"_;"title="/nowiki>Pink_Floyd">/nowiki>Pink_Floyd's">Pink_Floyd.html"_;"title="/nowiki>Pink_Floyd">/nowiki>Pink_Floyd's''A_Saucerful_of_Secrets.html" ;"title="Pink_Floyd">/nowiki>Pink_Floyd">/ ...

In/Casino/Out
''In/Casino/Out'' (stylized as ''in/CASINO/OUT'') is the second full-length album by American post-hardcore band At the Drive-In, released on August 18, 1998, through Fearless Records. It was recorded as a live studio album, with the intention of better capturing the energy and sound of their live shows. The album marks a clear middle ground between the raw, lo-fi sound of their first album, ''Acrobatic Tenement'', and the sleeker, more produced sound heard on ''Relationship of Command''. In 2016, ''Rolling Stone'' placed the album at #20 in their "40 Greatest Emo Albums of All Time" list. Background and recording During the recording of the album, the band faced a sort of crisis when they were unable to find a label that was able to release the record. By that point in time, Flipside, the label that issued ''Acrobatic Tenement'', quit releasing records and Offtime Records, who released the band's ''El Gran Orgo'' the previous year, was not in the financial position to issue mo ...

Terminal Love
Terminal Love is the second studio album by American musician Peter Ivers. It was released in 1974. Style ''Tucson Weekly'' described it as a " pop/prog/avant-garde album". According to Josh Frank, ''Terminal Love'' "had clearly been attempting, at least, to be a pop album", noting that the songs were shorter and featured "standard variations on the verse-chorus-verse structure". He also noted a greater influence of blues and blues rock, with Ivers' erstwhile jazz and baroque influences buried "deep in the background". Jason Ankeny of AllMusic wrote that the album "suggests the work of Captain Beefheart; indeed, Magic Band/Frank Zappa collaborator Eliot Ingber appears on several tracks." "The album" wrote Jim Allen for ''Bandcamp Daily'', "was no wistful collection of gently introspective ballads: Its songs sport unorthodox structures, shifting tempos and time signatures, and arch, witty lyrics referencing everything from Freud, Adler, and Reich (“Holding the Cobra”) to t ...
