Alois Ander
Alois Ander (also ''Aloys''; 24 August 1821 – 11 December 1864) was a German operatic tenor, active in Vienna in the middle of the nineteenth century. In 1900, Carl Ferdinand Pohl called him "one of the most famous German tenor singers of recent times.". Career He was born Aloys Anderle at Libitz (now Libice nad Doubravou) in Bohemia. His voice, though not powerful, was extremely sympathetic in quality. He went to Vienna in the hope that his talents would be recognised there, but it required all the energy and influence of Franz Wild the singer, at that time ''Ober-Regisseur'' to the Theater am Kärntnertor, before he was allowed to appear there. He appeared for the first time on 22 October 1845 as Stradella in the opera of that name, though with no previous experience of the boards whatever. Lohengrin (opera)
''Lohengrin'', WWV 75, is a Romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the ''Parzival'' of Wolfram von Eschenbach, and its sequel ''Lohengrin'', itself inspired by the epic of ''Garin le Loherain''. It is part of the Knight of the Swan legend. The opera has inspired other works of art. King Ludwig II of Bavaria named his castle Neuschwanstein Castle after the Swan Knight. It was King Ludwig's patronage that later gave Wagner the means and opportunity to complete, build a theatre for, and stage his epic cycle ''Der Ring des Nibelungen''. Joseph Michael Jahn (born August 4, 1943) is an American journalist, author and memoirist. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and raised in Sayville, New York. He moved to New York City in 1966 and was educated at Dowling College, Adelphi University, and Columbia University. Stráž pod Ralskem (until 1946 Vartenberk; german: Wartenberg (am Rollberg)) is a town in Česká Lípa District in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 3,800 inhabitants. Etymology The local castle was called Wartenberg (''Warte auf Berge'' meant "guard on the hill" in German). Vartenberk was the Czech transcription of the name. The modern Czech name of the town 'Stráž'' means literally "guard", ''pod Ralskem'' refers to its location below Ralsko Mountain. ''William Tell'' (french: Guillaume Tell, link=no; it, Guglielmo Tell, link=no) is a French-language opera in four acts by Italian composer Gioachino Rossini to a libretto by Victor-Joseph Étienne de Jouy and L. F. Bis, based on Friedrich Schiller's play ''Wilhelm Tell,'' which, in turn, drew on the William Tell legend. The opera was Rossini's last, although he lived for nearly 40 more years. Fabio Luisi said that Rossini planned for ''Guillaume Tell'' to be his last opera even as he composed it. Meyerbeer
Giacomo Meyerbeer (born Jakob Liebmann Beer; 5 September 1791 – 2 May 1864) was a German opera composer, "the most frequently performed opera composer during the nineteenth century, linking Mozart and Wagner". With his 1831 opera ''Robert le diable'' and its successors, he gave the genre of grand opera 'decisive character'. Meyerbeer's grand opera style was achieved by his merging of German orchestra style with Italian vocal tradition. These were employed in the context of sensational and melodramatic libretti created by Eugène Scribe and were enhanced by the up-to-date theatre technology of the Paris Opéra. They set a standard which helped to maintain Paris as the opera capital of the nineteenth century. Born to a rich Jewish family, Meyerbeer began his musical career as a pianist but soon decided to devote himself to opera, spending several years in Italy studying and composing. Carl Ferdinand Pohl
Anton Carl Ferdinand Pohl (6 September 1819 - 28 April 1887) was a German-Austrian music historian, archivist, and composer. Pohl was born in Darmstadt. He attended high school in his hometown and studied to be an engraver. At the same time he took music lessons with Christian Heinrich Rinck. In 1841 he went to Vienna and continued his education with Simon Sechter. From 1849 to 1855, he worked as an organist at the Protestant church in Gumpendorf. He then traveled. In 1866 he took over the post of archivist of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna. As a music writer, he produced books about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Joseph Haydn. Among his friends was Johannes Brahms, whom he encouraged to compose the '' Haydn Variations'' (Op. 56). He died in Vienna. His estate is located at the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde. ''Le prophète'' (''The Prophet'') is a grand opera in five acts by Giacomo Meyerbeer, which was premiered in Paris on 16 April 1849. The French-language libretto was by Eugène Scribe and Émile Deschamps, after passages from the ''Essay on the Manners and Spirit of Nations'' by Voltaire. The plot is based on the life of John of Leiden, Anabaptist leader and self-proclaimed "King of Münster" in the 16th century. Performance history After the brilliant success of their grand opera ''Les Huguenots'' (1836), Meyerbeer and his librettist Scribe decided to collaborate again on a piece based on a historical religious conflict. Meyerbeer's great personal wealth and his duties as official court composer to King Frederick William IV of Prussia meant that there was no hurry to complete the opera, and it was more than a decade in the composition and planning. ''Stradella'' is a Grand Opera in five acts by Louis Niedermeyer to a libretto by Emile Deschamps and Émilien Pacini. Based on a highly romanticized version of the life of the composer Alessandro Stradella (1639–1682), it was premiered at the Paris Opera on 3 March 1837. Background The storyline of the opera is fashioned from the fanciful legend told by Pierre Bourdelot in his 1715 ''Histoire de la musique''.
