Alna Meetinghouse
The Alna Meetinghouse is a historic meeting house on Maine State Route 218 in Alna Center, Maine. Built in 1789, it is one of the oldest churches in the state, with a virtually intact interior. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Description The Alna Meetinghouse is located on the west side of Maine 218, a short way north of Alna Cemetery and about south of the road's Sheepscot River crossing. It is set close to the road, and faces south. The building is a -story wooden structure, with a side gable roof and exterior of clapboards and wooden shingles. It has no tower, and a gable-roofed entry vestibule and stairhouse projects from the center of the five-bay front facade. The entrance is flanked by pilasters and topped by an entablature and cornice. Balconies surround three sides of the interior and are supported by hand-hewn pillars. Maine State Route 218
State Route 218 (SR 218) is a state highway in Lincoln County, Maine. The road connects U.S. Route 1 (US 1) and SR 27 at Wiscasset and SR 17/ SR 32 in the town of Whitefield. Throughout its whole route, SR 218 parallels the Sheepscot River. Route description SR 218 begins along Federal Street in Wiscasset, the county seat of Lincoln County. From Main Street (US 1/SR 27), it heads north past many houses, a cemetery, school, and a museum. After staying near the west side of the Sheepscot River through downtown Wiscasset, the river bends away from the road and the road starts to climb a small bluff near a stream. Alna is a town in Lincoln County, Maine, United States. The population was 710 at the 2020 census. Alna is home to the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railway Museum and is noted for its historic architecture, including the early mill village of Head Tide. History Originally a part of old Pownalborough, the town was settled around 1760 and incorporated in 1794 by the Massachusetts General Court as New Milford. But residents didn't like the name, so it was changed in 1811 to Alna, Latin for alder, the tree which grows in profusion along the banks of the Sheepscot River. Alna was the site of the first fish hatchery in Maine, started shortly after the Civil War. Between 1895 and 1933, the narrow gauge Wiscasset, Waterville & Farmington Railway operated 3 stations in the town: Head Tide, Alna Center, and Sheepscot. A box pew is a type of church pew that is encased in panelling and was prevalent in England and other Protestant countries from the 16th to early 19th centuries. History in England Before the rise of Protestantism, seating was not customary in churches and only accorded to the lord of the manor, civic dignitaries and finally churchwardens. After 1569 stools and seating were installed in Protestant churches primarily because the congregation were expected to listen to sermons, and various types of seating were introduced including the box pew. Dresden is a town in Lincoln County, Maine, United States, that was incorporated in 1794. The population was 1,725 at the 2020 census. History The town was originally settled in 1752 under the name Frankfort by French and German Huguenots, who were part of the first wave of French-speaking immigrants to arrive in Maine, but were distinguished from later arrivals by their Protestant faith. William Shirley built Fort Shirley in the community at the same time Fort Halifax (Maine) was built. First called Frankfort, so that the new French immigrants could pretend to be German, the town was incorporated as Pownalborough in 1760, when Lincoln County was created in the Maine District of Massachusetts.
