Almoral is an unincorporated community in Oneida Township, Delaware County, Iowa, United States. Geography The community is on county highway D13, north-northwest of Earlville. History The first white settler in Almoral was the Reverend James H. Kasson, who arrived in 1854. In 1856, his home was purchased by Congregationalists from Massachusetts, who hoped to establish a religious commune in the area. In 1857, Kasson platted Almoral. A log cabin school and post office also opened that year. In 1858, the Almoral Institute, a high school, opened, closing in 1860. In 1871, that building became the Almoral Congregational Church. In 1872, arrangements were made where a Methodist congregation would alternate meeting every other sabbath with the Congregationalists; eventually, the Methodists moved to the congregation in nearby Earlville. Rural Free Delivery (RFD) was a program of the United States Post Office Department that began in the late 19th century to deliver mail directly to rural destinations. Previously, individuals living in remote homesteads had to pick up mail themselves at sometimes distant post offices or pay private carriers for delivery. RFD became a political football, with politicians promising it to voters, and benefitting themselves to reach voters. The proposal to offer free rural delivery was not universally embraced. Chicago Great Western Railroad
The Chicago Great Western Railway was a Class I railroad that linked Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha, and Kansas City. It was founded by Alpheus Beede Stickney in 1885 as a regional line between St. Paul and the Iowa state line called the Minnesota and Northwestern Railroad. Through mergers and new construction, the railroad, named Chicago Great Western after 1892, quickly became a multi-state carrier. One of the last Class I railroads to be built, it competed against several other more well-established railroads in the same territory, and developed a corporate culture of innovation and efficiency to survive. Area code 563 is a telephone area code for the east central and northeast corner of the state of Iowa, and includes most of the Iowa side of the Quad Cities. Area code 563 was split from area code 319 in 2001, becoming active on March 25, 2001, and finally becoming mandatory on December 2, 2001. Prior to the implementation of the code, there was debate over whether the 563 code should have been implemented as a split, or overlaid over the existing 319 code. Mobile phone providers were in favor of the overlay, as a split would have required ''en masse'' reprogramming of cell phones.
