Alma Llanera (film)
''Alma llanera'' (English: "Soul of the Plains") is a 1965 Mexican Western drama film directed by Gilberto Martínez Solares and starring Antonio Aguilar, Flor Silvestre and Manuel Capetillo. It features Aguilar portraying his characteristic film hero. Plot Two childhood friends, Juan Pablo (Antonio Aguilar) and Ramiro (Manuel Capetillo) meet again, but when a difficult situation arises, the friends are slowly turned into rivals. Mario Gilberto Agustin Martinez Solares (January 19, 1906 – January 18, 1997) was a Mexican director, cinematographer, screenwriter, and actor who is considered one of the most prolific filmmakers in Mexican cinema having directed more than 160 films, most of them written by him during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema. He is also recognized as the most important comedy director in Mexico. Life and career Gilberto Martínez Solares was born on January 19, 1906, in Mexico City. His father, Gilberto Martínez Medina, was an accountant that worked for the Madero government. "Alma Llanera" ("Soul of the Plains") is a Venezuelan song, a joropo, created by Venezuelan musicians Pedro Elías Gutiérrez (composer) and Rafael Bolívar Coronado (lyricist). It was originally part of a zarzuela whose premiere was on September 19, 1914, at the Teatro Caracas. ''Alma Llanera'' has since come to be considered as Venezuela's unofficial second national anthem. Its hundredth anniversary was marked by its being declared ''Bien de Interés Cultural''. The first part of Alma Llanera is inspired on the waltz Marisela by composer Sebastian Díaz Peña from Venezuela, while the second part of Alma Llanera is inspired on the waltz Mita by the Curaçaon composer Jan Gerard Palm (1831-1906).
