Claude Allègre
Claude Allègre (; born 31 March 1937) is a French politician and scientist. Scientific work The main scientific area of Claude Allègre was geochemistry. Allègre co-authored an ''Introduction to geochemistry'' in 1974. Since the 1980s, he mainly publishes popular science and political books. In 1976, Allègre and volcanologist Haroun Tazieff started an intense and very public quarrel about whether inhabitants should evacuate the surroundings of the erupting '' la Soufrière'' volcano in Guadeloupe. Allègre, who was speaking outside his area of immediate expertise, held that inhabitants should be evacuated, while Tazieff held that the Soufrière was harmless because all analyses pointed to a purely phreatic eruption with no sign of fresh magma. In part out of caution, the authorities decided to follow Allègre's advice and evacuate. Château D'Allègre
300px, Château d'Allègre The Château d'Allègre is a ruined castle in the '' commune'' of Allègre in the Haute-Loire ''département'' of France. Description The ruins consist of two corner towers of the former keep, joined by a section of machicolation and round walk, and the base of a tower in the ''enceinte''. History The castle was the seat of the second barony of Auvergne. It was constructed towards the end of the 14th century with three fortified ''enceintes''. It was built by Morinot de Tourzel, a favourite of the Duc de Berry, using plans drawn up by the architect Hugues Aubriot, architect of the Bastille. The castle underwent several sieges during the Hundred Years' War and, in 1593, the war against the Catholic League. Germaine Tillion
Germaine Tillion (30 May 1907 – 18 April 2008) was a French ethnologist, best known for her work in Algeria in the 1950s on behalf of the French government. A member of the French resistance, she spent time in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Biography Tillion was born on May 30, 1907 in Allegre (Haute-Loire) in south-central France. She was the daughter of Lucien Tillion, a magistrate, and Émilie Cussac Tillion. Her mother was also noted as an art historian and a French resistance fighter. She had a sister called Francoise and they were raised Catholic. Youth and studies Tillion spent her youth with her family in Clermont-Ferrand. She left for Paris to study social anthropology with Marcel Mauss and Louis Massignon, obtaining degrees from the École pratique des hautes études, the École du Louvre, and the INALCO.
