Allsopp's Brewery
Samuel Allsopp & Sons was one of the largest breweries operating in Burton upon Trent, England. History Origins Allsopp's origins go back to the 1740s, when Benjamin Wilson, an innkeeper-brewer of Burton, brewed beer for his own premises and sold some to other innkeepers. Over the next 60 years, Wilson and his son and successor, also called Benjamin, cautiously built up the business and became the town's leading brewer. Burton upon Trent, also known as Burton-on-Trent or simply Burton, is a market town in the borough of East Staffordshire in the county of Staffordshire, England, close to the border with Derbyshire. Allied Breweries was the result of a 1961 merger between Ind Coope (of Burton), Ansells (of Birmingham), and Tetley Walker (of Leeds). In 1978, Allied Breweries merged with the food and catering group J. Lyons and Co to form Allied Lyons. The breweries business merged with Carlsberg in 1992 and became Carlsberg-Tetley, which is now part of Carlsberg Group, with Carlsberg-Tetley now known as Carlsberg UK. Burton Brewery Company
The Burton Brewery Company was one of the largest brewers in Burton upon Trent, England in the 19th century. The company was founded in 1842 by Henry and Thomas Wilders, who came from a family of tanners. They built their brewery on their leather-working premises in Burton High Street. It grew remarkably quickly and was the third largest brewery in 1861 with 297 employees. The company also had maltings in Ashby-de-la-Zouch. Along with many other breweries Burton Brewery Co. was in financial difficulties in 1907. Plans to combine with Thomas Salt and Co and Samuel Allsopp & Sons fell through and the company went into receivership. It was bought in 1915 by Worthington and Co, and Worthington brand beers continued to be brewed at the High Street brewery even after Worthington was taken over by Bass in 1927. Thomas Salt And Co
Thomas Salt and Co. was a brewery that operated in Burton upon Trent, England, between 1774 and 1927; over 150 years. History 18th century The brewery was founded in 1751 as Clay's Brewery by Joseph Clay I (1726-1800), who came originally from Merrybower, near Derby. Some time before Joseph Clay I died in 1800, his son Joseph II (1756-1824) took over the business, and was described in The "British Directory" of 1791 as one of the famous "nine common brewers of Burton-on-Trent." Joseph II also acquired the Leeson brewery, and later opened one of the first banks in Burton, and delegated the brewery management to his maltster, Thomas Salt. He sold out to Salt just before the Napoleonic Blockade, which led to a dramatic decline in beer exports. Samuel Allsopp, 2nd Baron Hindlip
Samuel Charles Allsopp, 2nd Baron Hindlip (24 March 1842 – 12 July 1897), was a British businessman and Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1873 and 1887 when he inherited the peerage. Life and career Allsopp was the eldest son of Henry Allsopp, 1st Baron Hindlip, head of the brewery firm of Samuel Allsopp & Sons, of Burton-on-Trent and his wife Elizabeth Tongue. He was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge and was a lieutenant in the Derbyshire Yeomanry. In 1880, he took over the running of the brewery. He was also deputy chairman of the Great Northern Railway. In 1873, Allsopp was elected Member of Parliament for Staffordshire East and held the seat until 1880. He became a deputy lieutenant of Staffordshire in 1876. He was elected MP for Taunton in 1882.
