Allseas Group S.A. is a Swiss-based offshore contractor specialising in pipelay, heavy lift and subsea construction. It was founded in 1985 by owner and president Edward Heerema, employs 4,000 people and operates worldwide. The company is headquartered in Châtel-Saint-Denis, Switzerland. It also owns a subsidiary, Allseas Engineering B.V., based in the Netherlands with offices in Delft, Eindhoven and Enschede, which provides project management and engineering services to the group. ''Pioneering Spirit'' (formerly ''Pieter Schelte'') is a catamaran crane vessel owned by the Switzerland-based Allseas Group designed for the single-lift installation and removal of large oil and gas platforms and the installation of record-weight pipelines. The , vessel is the world's largest vessel by gross tonnage, and since September 2021 also the largest floating sheerleg in the world. It was built in South Korea by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in 2013 at a cost of €2.6 billion. It commenced offshore operations in August 2016. Edward Heerema
Edward Heerema (born 1947) is a Dutch engineer, businessman and the sole owner of Allseas, a major offshore oil business company. Through Allseas, he is the owner of the largest ship in the world, the pipe-layer Pioneering Spirit. Early life Edward Heerema was born in 1947 to and Erna Heerema. He has four brothers and one sister. He spent his childhood in Venezuela where his father, after service in the Waffen-SS, had exiled himself after World War II and worked as an engineer in Maracaibo. He had a close relationship to his father, with whom he worked at his father's company Heerema Marina Contractors (HMC) for eight years. During his stay at the HMC company, he was put in charge of the research and development department. After his father died in 1981, he and his brothers took care of HMC for some years, until in 1985 he decided to found Allseas. ''Solitaire'' is a large deep-sea pipe laying ship. It was at the time of conversion the world's largest pipe-laying ship at long (excluding pipe-laying apparatus) and . When fully operational she has a crew of 420, a pipe carrying capacity of 22,000 tonnes and a pipe lay speed of more than 9 km a day. The ship is owned by the Allseas Group, a Dutch pipelaying and marine construction firm with their headquarters in Switzerland. History The ship was initially built in 1972 as a bulk carrier and launched as ''Trentwood'' by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries at their shipyard in Hiroshima, Japan. In 1992, Allseas acquired ''Trentwood'' for conversion into a pipelay vessel. Allseas awarded the conversion contract to Sembawang Shipyards in Singapore on a lump sum basis; however, the contract was terminated in 1995. The (, "Armed SS") was the combat branch of the Nazi Party's ''Schutzstaffel'' (SS) organisation.
