Alliance
An alliance is a relationship among people, groups, or states that have joined together for mutual benefit or to achieve some common purpose, whether or not explicit agreement has been worked out among them. Members of an alliance are called allies. Alliances form in many settings, including political alliances, military alliances, and business alliances. The Allies of World War I, Entente Powers, or Allied Powers were a coalition of countries led by France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Italy, Japan, and the United States against the Central Powers of Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria, and their colonies during the First World War (1914–1918). By the end of the first decade of the 20th century, the major European powers were divided between the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance. The Triple Entente was made up of France, Britain, and Russia. The Triple Alliance was originally composed of Germany, Austria–Hungary, and Italy, but Italy remained neutral in 1914. As the war progressed, each coalition added new members. Japan joined the Entente in 1914 and after proclaiming its neutrality at the beginning of the war, Italy also joined the Entente in 1915. The Allies, formally referred to as the United Nations from 1942, were an international military coalition formed during the Second World War (1939–1945) to oppose the Axis powers, led by Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, and Fascist Italy. The Allied Powers (Maritime Courts) Act 1941 ( 4 & 5 Geo. 6. c. 21) was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that allowed certain British Allies during the Second World War to set up maritime courts with criminal jurisdiction within the United Kingdom. Act The Act came into need because of the early events of the Second World War, in which the remnants of the European anti-Nazi forces fled to Britain after their defeat. Finding their armed forces in Britain, sometimes with a large number of merchant navy ships, they had no effective machinery of justice. Allied Powers (horse)
Allied Powers is a retired Irish horse trained by Michael Bell and owned by David Fish and Edward Ware. He is the winner of Group Three Prix D'Hedouville at Longchamp and Group Two Grand Prix de Chantilly at Chantilly. Allied Powers was bred in Ireland and is a son of Invincible Spirit (dam: Always Friendly). Allied Powers won his first race in April 2008 at Pontefract Racecourse. He won the race, a 12-furlong handicap over heavy ground, with ease and followed it up with two more wins in as many races. The first, a handicap also 12 furlongs at Chester Racecourse, saw him beat second-place Patkai by two and a half lengths. His third consecutive victory came in an 11-furlong handicap at Newbury Racecourse. These three wins saw Allied Powers' handicap rating increase from 68 to 82 in less than a month.
