Allied Gold Mining PLC was an Australian-based Pacific Rim gold producer with gold production, exploration and development projects in Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. The company ceased to exist following a merger with St Barbara in 2012. History The company dates back to 2003 when it took an interest in the original owner of the gold mining project on Simberi Island. Operations Simberi, Papua New Guinea Allied Gold operates an open pit gold (and silver) mine on Simberi Island, the northernmost island of the Tabar Group, in the New Ireland Province of eastern Papua New Guinea. The mine is wholly owned and operated by Allied Gold. Gold production started in February 2008. Open-pit mining, also known as open-cast or open-cut mining and in larger contexts mega-mining, is a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the earth from an open-air pit, sometimes known as a borrow. This form of mining differs from extractive methods that require tunnelling into the earth, such as long wall mining. Tabar Island is an island of the Tabar Group of Papua New Guinea, located to the east of New Ireland. It is inhabited by the Tabar people. Geography Tabar Island is the main island of the Tabar Islands and forms part of the New Ireland Province. Gold Ridge (mine)
Gold Ridge is a gold mine on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, about southeast of the capital Honiara. Civil unrest caused closure for two years soon after opening in 1998. Simberi Island
Simberi Island is a volcanic island in the Tabar Group, in Papua New Guinea's New Ireland Province. Geography and geology Simberi is the northernmost and smallest of the three islands in the Tabar Group. The island is about 9 km long and 7 km wide and has an area of about 40 square kilometers. Its highest point in the highlands on the eastern side of the island is a 340 m eroded volcanic cone. The interior of the island is largely covered by rainforest.
