Alley Cat Allies
Alley Cat Allies (incorporated on October 6, 1991) is a nonprofit animal welfare organisation. It advocates for reform of public policies and institutions to better serve the interests of cats. Based in Bethesda, Maryland, the group is best known for introducing trap–neuter–return to the United States. Alley Cat Allies' emphasis is on stray and feral cat advocacy and providing information on trap–neuter–return, the method of managing feral cat populations that the organization considers humane and effective. Trap–neuter–return Organizations
Trap–neuter–return (TNR), also known as trap–neuter–release, is a controversial method that attempts to manage populations of feral cats. The process involves live-trapping the cats, having them neutered, ear-tipped for identification, and, if possible, vaccinated, then releasing them back into the outdoors. If the location is deemed unsafe or otherwise inappropriate, the cats may be relocated to other appropriate areas (barn/farmyard homes are often considered best). Ideally, friendly adults and kittens young enough to be easily socialized are retained and placed for adoption. Feral cats cannot be socialized, shun most human interaction and do not fare well in confinement, so they are not retained. Project Bay Cat
Project Bay Cat is a trap-neuter-return initiative for community cats in Northern California. Summary Project Bay Cat was founded in 2004 to address concerns about a large group of community cats (free-roaming cats not belonging to individuals) living along a popular recreation trail in Northern California. Volunteers initiated a Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program to humanely stop the growth of the cat population and reduce its size over time through natural attrition. In addition to TNR efforts, volunteers also rescued kittens and friendly adult cats to find them homes. Feeding stations were built and were placed - with the help of local experts - away from wildlife habitats, and a volunteer-based feeding program was begun to provide daily care for the remaining cats. A no-kill shelter is an animal shelter that does not kill healthy or treatable animals even when the shelter is full, reserving euthanasia for terminally ill animals or those considered dangerous to public safety.
