Allentown, Illinois
Allentown is an unincorporated community in Tazewell County, Illinois, United States. Allentown is in the Tremont Township, though it is much closer to Mackinaw than to Tremont. Allentown is northwest of Mackinaw and northeast of Tremont. History The community derives its name from one Edward James Allen (1810-1889). The name “Allentown” first appears on the Tremont Township plat map found in the 1891 Tazewell County atlas. According to local lore, Mr. Allen had made up the name "Allentown" in 1873 in order to appease the railroad shipping clerk who required each cattle stop to be named. Allentown was a station of the Illinois Terminal Railroad interurban system for a number of years. A plat map in the 1864 Tazewell County atlas indicates that a country school house was located near the center of Allentown. Illinois Terminal Railroad
The Illinois Terminal Railroad Company (reporting marks "ITC"), known as the Illinois Traction System until 1937, was a heavy duty interurban electric railroad with extensive passenger and freight business in central and southern Illinois from 1896 to 1956. When Depression era Illinois Traction was in financial distress and had to reorganize, the Illinois Terminal name was adopted to reflect the line's primary money making role as a freight interchange link to major steam railroads at its terminal ends, Peoria, Danville, and St. Louis. Interurban passenger service slowly was reduced, ending in 1956. Freight operation continued but was hobbled by tight street running in some towns requiring very sharp radius turns. Tremont is a village in Tazewell County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,236 at the 2010 census. Tremont is located 14 miles southeast of Peoria. History Tremont was also host to Abraham Lincoln during his travels as a lawyer before his advancement into higher office. Lincoln visited the Tremont Courthouse in 1842; here, James Shields challenged him to a duel. Lincoln last spoke in Tremont on August 30, 1858. A marker now stands in commemoration of the courthouse. Mackinaw is a village in Tazewell County, Illinois, United States, and is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. Its population was 1,950 at the 2010 census. Allentown Union Hall
The Allentown Union Hall is a historic meeting hall located east of Illinois Route 121 in Allentown, Illinois. The building was built in 1892 to host community events in Allentown, a small rural settlement. Like many small communities nationwide at the turn of the century, the citizens of Allentown wished to expand their educational and cultural horizons; since rough dirt roads made travel outside the community difficult, the community used the hall to host its own cultural events. The Allentown Helping Hand Circle, the community organization that raised the money for the building, hosted many of the hall's early events, which included community dinners and talent shows. The hall also hosted shows put on both by actors and musicians from Allentown and the surrounding area and by traveling acts who stopped in the community.
