Allawah is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Allawah is 16 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the St George area. Allawah lies in the local government area of the Georges River Council. The postcode is 2218, which is shared by the neighbouring suburb of Carlton. History The name "Allawah" is Aboriginal in origin, from a local term meaning "make your abode here" or "remain here". It is thought that the Aboriginal clan of the Tharawal people most prominent in the St George area, the Gameygal or Kameygal – the people of Kamay (Botany Bay), lived in and around the area. The first land grant was made in 1808 to Captain John Townson by Major George Johnston after he had briefly deposed Governor Bligh in 1808, consisting of 1950 acres (789 hectares), which became known as Townson's Farm. Allawah Railway Station
Allawah railway station is located on the Illawarra line, serving the Sydney suburb of Allawah. It is served by Sydney Trains T4 line services. History Allawah station opened on 25 October 1925 on the same date that the Illawarra line was duplicated. It consists of two island platforms with an overhead concourse and ticket office at the northern end. The original brick station buildings were demolished in the 1990s and replaced by lighter passenger shelters. In 2001, the station was upgraded with the provision of passenger lifts and expanded shelters. Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Railway Line
The Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line (numbered T4, coloured azure blue) is a commuter railway line in the eastern and southern suburbs of Sydney and is a part of the Sydney Trains network. The line was constructed in the 1880s to Wollongong to take advantage of agricultural and mining potentials in the Illawarra area. In March 1926, it became the first railway in New South Wales to run electric train services. Division Of Banks
The Division of Banks is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. History The division was created in 1949 and is named for Sir Joseph Banks, the British naturalist and botanist who accompanied James Cook on his voyage to Australia in 1770. It has always been based in the south-western and southern suburbs of Sydney, including the suburbs of Padstow, Panania, Peakhurst and Revesby. Up until 2013, it was held since its creation by the Australian Labor Party, but has grown increasingly marginal from the 1990s onward. It was almost lost in 2004, but the 2006 redistribution added areas to the west in Bankstown and Condell Park which strengthened the seat for Labor. South Hurstville is a suburb in the St George area of Southern Sydney, 18 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district. South Hurstville is in the local government area of the Georges River Council. Hurstville and Hurstville Grove are separate neighbouring suburbs. Carlton is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Carlton is located 15 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the St George area. Carlton lies across the boundary of two local government areas, the Georges River Council and the Bayside Council. History The area was originally heavily timbered. Carlton was part of a grant of made to Captain John Townson in 1808. The grant extended from King Georges Road and Stoney Creek Road to beyond Kogarah railway station. When the railway line to Hurstville was opened in 1884, large estates were subdivided and residents began moving in. However, there was no platform at Carlton until 1889. Carss Park is a suburb in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia 17 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the Georges River Council. History In 1921 the Blakehurst Progress Association made attempts to secure Carss Bush for a public park and Kogarah council was able to acquire the land for the people.
