Allan Vizents
Allan Vizents (1945–1987) was an American artist who lived and worked in Australia. He was a founding member of Perth based conceptual art group Media-Space, active from 1981 to 1986. He moved to Sydney in 1986 and took up the role of director of the organisation Performance Space, until his death in 1987. Vizents was born in California in 1945, and arrived in Perth in October 1978. His initial interest was in photography, and his work from this period is held in collections of the State Library of Western Australia, John Curtin Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. The group Media-Space was formed by Vizents along with Paul Thomas, Jeff Jones, Ann Graham, Judy Chambers, Neil Sullivan, Brian McKay and Lindsay Parkhill and many other occasional participants. Art Gallery Of Western Australia
The Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA) is a public art gallery that is part of the Perth Cultural Centre, in Perth. It is located near the Western Australian Museum and State Library of Western Australia and is supported and managed by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries of the Government of Western Australia. The current gallery main building opened in 1979. It is linked to the old court house – The Centenary Galleries. History The Art Gallery was originally housed in the Jubilee Building with the State Museum and Library. The Jubilee Building, which was intended to be a public library only, was to be opened in honour of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887, but instead, only the first stone for the foundation was laid. Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) is a contemporary visual and performance arts venue located in a heritage-listed building in Perth, Western Australia. History 1896–1959: Schools The building at 53 James Street, Northbridge, which dates from 1896, was for 40 years the Perth Boys' and Girls' School (one of several schools known collectively as Perth Central School). The Perth Central School was developed principally between 1877 and 1914. It amalgamated the Infants' School, Perth Boys' School, Perth Girls' School, Manual Training School and Normal School on the one site between Roe and James Streets. On 22 May 1895, the contract to construct Perth Boys' and Girls' Schools building in James Street was awarded to William Atkins for the sum of 10,452 pounds.
