Allan Leonard Lewis
Allan Leonard Lewis VC (28 February 1895 – 21 September 1918) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Details Lewis was born in Herefordshire, but moved to South Wales to find work. On the outbreak of the First World War he was employed by the Great Western Railway as a bus driver at Neath. he joined up in March 1915. The GWR has no record of Lewis on its Rolls of Honour or War memorials, and it may be that he joined up without the company's agreement, and thus lost his post and pension rights. By September 1918 he was 23 years old, and a lance-corporal in the 6th Battalion, The Northamptonshire Regiment, British Army during the same war when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Whitney-on-Wye
Whitney-on-Wye is a village and civil parish in Herefordshire, England, roughly a mile east of the border with Wales. The population of this civil parish at the 2011 census was 117. It is on the A438 road, and on the River Wye. The village is west of Hereford. The church is dedicated to the Saints Peter and Paul. History Whitney-on-Wye was first mentioned in the Domesday Book with the spelling Witenie. The most plausible meaning for the name is ''White Water'', from the Anglo-Saxon ''hwit'' (white) and ''ey'' (water), and probably refers to the River Wye which runs through the area and which can become a torrent when heavy rains in the Welsh mountains cause it to swell. Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery, Haucourt
The Vis-en-Artois British Cemetery, Haucourt is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) burial ground for the dead of World War I located between the communes of Vis-en-Artois and Haucourt in the département of Pas-de-Calais, France. History The area was captured by the Canadian Corps in late August 1918 and the cemetery was opened soon after and was in use until after the armistice with reburials from the battlefield. Vis-en-Artois Memorial Located in the cemetery is the Vis-en-Artois Memorial which lists the names of 9813 men (9806 British and 16 South African) who fell from 8 August 1918 to the Armistice and who have no known grave. The memorial has a screen walls in three parts on which is carved the names of the missing listed by regiment. The memorial was designed by British sculptor Ernest Gillick.
