All Request
An all request television or radio show is a show that plays only listener or viewer requests. The introduction to The Carpenters' version of '' Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft'' features a fictional dialogue between the disc jockey of an all request program on "All Hit Radio" and a listener that the DJ thinks is "Mike Ledgerwood", but is in fact an alien race. The DJ comments that the request "We are observing your Earth" is "not on our play list". This refers to an actual practice of all request programs of having a pre-set play list, and excluding any requests for items that are not on it. Request (broadcasting)
A request is a frequently offered feature by some form of broadcasting entity, initially started in radio. It is an effort by the broadcaster to become interactive with their audience, allowing a means for members of the audience to ask for something specific to happen; usually the playing of a specific song. The most common form of this is the telephone request line, where listeners are encouraged to call a specific telephone number to a radio station to give their request. Disk jockeys then would use various forms of identifying that the song they were about to play had been requested, either by playing a jingle to that effect, mentioning the requester by name, playing back a recording of the request phone call or even taking the request live on the air. Many disk jockeys have built their entire act and reputation around their method of dealing with requests. Similarly radio stations have built their format around taking requests. The Carpenters
The Carpenters (officially known as Carpenters) were an American vocal and instrumental duo consisting of siblings Karen Carpenter, Karen (1950–1983) and Richard Carpenter (musician), Richard Carpenter (born 1946). They produced a distinct, soft, musical style, combining Karen's contralto vocals with Richard's harmonizing, arranging, and composition skills. During their 14-year career, the Carpenters recorded 10 albums along with numerous singles and several television specials. The siblings were born in New Haven, Connecticut, and moved to Downey, California, in 1963. Richard took piano lessons as a child, progressing to California State University, Long Beach, while Karen learned the drums. Calling Occupants Of Interplanetary Craft
"Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" is a power ballad by Canadian rock band Klaatu, originally released in 1976 on their first album '' 3:47 EST''. The song opened night transmission of the pirate radio station Radio Caroline. The year following its release, American soft rock duo the Carpenters covered the song, using a crew of 160 musicians. The Carpenters' version reached the top 10 in the UK and Canada, and charted at number 1 in Ireland. A disc jockey, more commonly abbreviated as DJ, is a person who plays recorded music for an audience. Types of DJs include Radio personality, radio DJs (who host programs on music radio stations), club DJs (who work at a nightclub or music festival), mobile DJs (who are hired to work at public and private events such as weddings, parties, or festivals), and turntablism, turntablists (who use record players, usually turntables, to manipulate sounds on phonograph records). MTV Classic (formerly VH1 Smooth, VH1 Classic Rock, and VH1 Classic) is an American pay television network owned by Paramount Media Networks. ''All Request Live'' is the fourth live album by the American rock band Ween, and the third to be released on their home record label Chocodog Records. The performance was webcast on July 22, 2003 and released on November 22, 2003. A Pitchfork Media review calls it "unquestionably the brownest live Ween of them all." ''All Request Live'' features tracks performed live as part of a web radio broadcast, playing songs selected by fans on the band's message board. ''Total Request Live'' (known commonly as ''TRL'') was an American television program broadcast on MTV that premiered on September 14, 1998. TRL featured popular music videos played during its countdown, and was also used as a promotion tool by musicians, actors, and other celebrity, celebrities to promote their newest works to the show's target Teen culture, teen demographics, demographic. During the original run of the program, ''TRL'' played the ten most Request (broadcasting), requested music videos of the day, as voted by viewers via phone or online. The show generally aired Monday through Thursday for one hour, though the scheduling and length of the show fluctuated over the years.
