All Else Failed (1995 Album)
''All Else Failed'' is the debut studio album by American metalcore band Zao. The album was later re-recorded and released as the identically titled '' All Else Failed'' in 2003. This album on Steadfast Records has had three pressings in total, with different cover art for each pressing: *1st press: 1996 (green artwork) *2nd press: 1999 (brown artwork) *3rd press: 2000 (black artwork) The album was again re-released in 2018, through Steadfast Records, with new artwork and was remixed and remastered. Critical reception While not many reviews of their debut album were published, a select few are available. Jesusfreakhideout.com's Steven Powless published a review of the album, giving it 2.5 stars out of 5. Despite his low-hung review, Powless states "Moreover, heart, I think, is really the driving force behind ''All Else Failed''; it's the engine that makes it go. Zao (American Band)
Zao () is an American metalcore band founded in Parkersburg, West Virginia and later relocated to Greensburg, Pennsylvania. Founded in March 1993, Zao has hosted several musicians and endured numerous roster changes to the point where no original members remain. Former drummer Jesse Smith (musician), Jesse Smith, vocalist Daniel Weyandt, Dan Weyandt, and guitarists Scott Mellinger and Russ Cogdell are seen by some fans as the "core" of Zao, with the current line up being the longest running in the band's history. For a time, the band featured Christian themes in their music and was regarded as a Christian band, however Zao (American band)#Religion, this theme was eventually met with debate among the members and the band currently no longer considers themselves a "Christian band" with only bassist Martin Lunn identifying as a Christian. Jesse Smith (musician)
Jesse Smith is an American musician, best known for his work as the original drummer of Christian metal band Zao. After leaving Zao, he has had multiple other bands/projects, including Gods, My Own Halo, Jesse Smith & the Holy Ghost, and Serpent Servant Slave. History In 1993, Jesse Smith was recruited by friends Roy Goudy, Mic Cox and Eric Reeder to play drums in their newly formed band, which later was named Zao. In 1995, Zao recorded their first album, '' All Else Failed'', with new singer Shawn Jonas (who would later form Symphony in Peril). In 1996, ''The Splinter Shards the Birth of Separation'' was released with the line-up of Roy Goudy, Mic Cox and Shawn Jonas. In 1997, all of the band members except for Smith quit Zao following the 1997 Cornerstone festival and a couple of shows they played on the way back home.. Switched (previously depicted as Sw1tched) was a nu metal band from Cleveland, Ohio. History Forming in 1999 as Sw1tch, the band played shows around Ohio and released a demo entitled ''Fuckin' Demo''. The songs "Anymore", "Wrongside", "Inside", "Darkening Days", "Last Chance", and "Skins", which appear in their demo versions on this CD, went on to appear on the '' Subject to Change'' album. This demo was later re-released on disc two of the "Ghosts in the Machine" album in 2006. Since a funk band already had rights to the name Switch, the band had to change their name to Sw1tched, and was later signed to Immortal/Virgin Records. After recording all of the bass for the '' Subject to Change'' album, bassist Shawn May left the band for unknown reasons, and was replaced by Chimaira drum tech Jason French.
