All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 1979
The 1979 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 93rd staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 27 May 1979 and ended on 2 September 1978. Cork GAA, Cork entered the championship as 1978 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, defending champions, however, they were beaten by Galway GAA, Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final. Kilkenny GAA, Kilkenny won the title after defeating Galway by 2–12 to 1–8 in the 1979 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final, final. Teams A total of eleven teams contested the championship, one of the fewest participants in years. Only four team contested the Leinster series of games. Ger Henderson
Ger Henderson (born 5 May 1954) is a former Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with the Kilkenny senior inter-county team in the 1970s and 1980s. Early life Ger Henderson was born in Johnstown, County Kilkenny in 1954. He was educated locally at Johnstown national school where his interest in hurling first began. Later, Henderson and his two brothers, Pat and John, would form the backbone of the Kilkenny team of the 1970s and early 1980s. Playing career Club Henderson played his club hurling with the local Fenians club in Johnstown. He was too young to play senior hurling when the club triumphed winning county championship titles in the early 1970s, however, he did win county title and a Leinster club title in 1974. Inter-county By 1972, Henderson was a member of the Kilkenny minor hurling team that won the All-Ireland title. The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Luthchleas Gael Coiste Laois) or Laois GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Laois. The 1923 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 37th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county hurling tournament. The championship began on 20 May 1923 and ended on 14 September 1924. The championship was won by Galway who secured the title following a 7-3 to 4-5 defeat of Limerick in the All-Ireland final. The 1961 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 75th staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 16 April 1961 and ended on 3 September 1961. Wexford were the defending champions, however, they were defeated in the provincial championship. The 1938 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 52nd staging of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county hurling tournament. The championship began on 1 May 1938 and ended on 4 September 1938. Tipperary were the defending champions but were disqualified from the championship after fielding an ineligible player in their Munster semi-final defeat of Clare. On 4 September 1938, Dublin won the championship following a 2-5 to 1-6 defeat of Waterford in the All-Ireland final. This was their sixth All-Ireland title, their first in eleven championship seasons. It remains their last All-Ireland triumph. Waterford's Locky Byrne was the championship's top scorer with 4-5.
