All-America Football Conference All-Star Game
The All-America Football Conference (AAFC) All-Star Game or Shamrock Bowl was an American football game played in Houston's old Rice Field on Saturday, December 17, 1949, between the Cleveland Browns (the 1949 AAFC Champions) and an all-star selection from the AAFC's other six teams. It was the AAFC's last game before it was merged into the National Football League (NFL). The "Shamrock Bowl" was promoted by Texas oilman Glen McCarthy, who had been seeking a Houston franchise (sports), franchise in either the AAFC or NFL. A disappointing crowd of 10,000 braved a rainstorm to watch the final AAFC game, in which the All-Stars defeat the Browns, 12–7. All-America Football Conference
The All-America Football Conference (AAFC) was a professional American football league that challenged the established National Football League (NFL) from 1946 to 1949. One of the NFL's most formidable challengers, the AAFC attracted many of the nation's best players, and introduced many lasting innovations to the game. However, the AAFC was ultimately unable to sustain itself in competition with the NFL. After it folded, three of its teams were admitted to the NFL: the San Francisco 49ers, the Cleveland Browns and the original Baltimore Colts (not to be confused with the later Baltimore Colts team, now the Indianapolis Colts). Al Baldwin
Alton "Al" Baldwin (February 21, 1923 – May 23, 1994) was a professional American football end/defensive back who played in the All-America Football Conference, the National Football League and the Canadian Football League. In his senior season as an End for the 1946 Arkansas Razorbacks football team, Baldwin helped Arkansas win a share of the Southwest Conference championship, and played the LSU Tigers to a 0-0 tie in the 1947 Cotton Bowl Classic. Baldwin was given 1st team All-SWC honors for his play that season. Louis Roy Groza (January 25, 1924 – November 29, 2000), nicknamed "the Toe", was an American professional football player who was a placekicker and offensive tackle while playing his entire career for the Cleveland Browns in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and National Football League (NFL). Groza was professional football's career kicking and points leader when he retired after the 1967 season. He played in 21 seasons for the Browns, helping the team to win eight league championships in that span. Otto Everett Graham Jr. (December 6, 1921 – December 17, 2003) was an American professional football player who was a quarterback for the Cleveland Browns in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and National Football League (NFL). William Augustus "Dub" Jones (born December 29, 1924) is a former American football halfback who played ten seasons in the National Football League (NFL) and the old All-America Football Conference (AAFC) in the late 1940s and early 1950s, primarily for the Cleveland Browns. He shares the NFL record for touchdowns scored in a single game, with six. Jones was born into an athletic family in Louisiana and played a variety of sports, including football, at his high school in Ruston. The team won the state championship in 1941, his senior year. Jones attended Louisiana State University on a scholarship for a year before being transferred to Tulane University in New Orleans as part of a World War II-era U.S. Navy training program. He played football at Tulane for two seasons before joining the Miami Seahawks of the new AAFC in 1946. Frank Cullen Albert (January 27, 1920 – September 4, 2002) was an American gridiron football player and coach. He played as a quarterback with the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL). Albert attended Stanford University, where he led the 1940 football team to an undefeated season and the Rose Bowl. Many who saw Albert in action credit him as being the greatest left-handed quarterback ever to play the game. Chester A. Mutryn (March 12, 1921 – March 24, 1995) was a professional American football halfback and defensive back in the All-America Football Conference and the National Football League. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 20th round of the 1943 NFL Draft. Early life He attended Xavier University after having exploits as quarterback for Cleveland Cathedral Latin High School (now known as Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School). Norman Parker "Red" Strader (December 21, 1902 – May 26, 1956) was an American football player and coach who served in both capacities at the collegiate and professional levels. An all-star game is an exhibition game that purports to showcase the best players (the "stars") of a sports league. The exhibition is between two teams organized solely for the event, usually representing the league's teams based on region or division, but sometimes dividing the players by an attribute such as nationality. Selection of the players may be done by a vote of the coaches and/or news media; in professional leagues, fans may vote on some or all of the roster.
