Aljustrel
Aljustrel () is a town and a municipality in the Portuguese district of Beja. The population in 2011 was 9,257, in an area of 458.47 km2. The present mayor is Nelson Domingos Brito, elected by the Socialist Party. The municipal holiday is June 13. History During the Roman era, Aljustrel was known as ''Metallum Vispascense''. It was occupied by the Moors but in 1235 the town was conquered from them by King D. Sancho II. The first foral (''charter'') was only conceded by King Sancho in 1252. A new foral was issued on 20 September 1510, by King D. Manuel I. On 28 January 2013, the civil parishes of Aljustrel and Rio dos Minhos were aggregated into one local authority called Aljustrel (Decree 11-A/2013, Diário da República, Série 1, 19). The Mines of Aljustrel ( pt, Minas de Aljustel) is a zinc/lead mine situated in the civil parish of Aljustrel e Rio de Moinhos, in the municipality of Aljustrel, in the Portuguese Alentejo district of Beja. The Castle of Aljustrel ( pt, Castelo de Aljustrel), is a Portuguese medieval castle in civil parish of Aljustrel e Rio de Moinhos, in the municipality of Aljustrel, in the district of Beja. History Dominating the mountaintop of the territory of the Baixo Alentejo, the walls that encompass Aljustrel were once occupied since the Neolithic and Chalcolithic, with the latter evidence in the fragments of flint and ceramics discovered at the site. This primary phase was succeeded by a hiatus, and there are no materials leading to a proto-historic or Roman period of occupation. It is unclear when the structure was used in a military capacity, but there are suggestions that it began during the late Muslim occupation, around the 13th century, at the time of the fortress of Alcácer do Sal. Fernanda Peleja Patrício
Fernanda Peleja Patrício (19292000) was a Portuguese communist who opposed the country's '' Estado Novo'' regime. After the overthrow of the ''Estado Novo'', she served on the Constituent Assembly of Portugal and in the first legislature of the Assembly of the Republic. Early life Fernanda Peleja Patrício was born in Aljustrel in the Alentejo region of Portugal, on 5 October 1929. She was born in the neighbourhood built to house the miners working for the Aljustrel mine. Her father was one of the founders of the mineworkers' union. She had six siblings. She became a primary school teacher in 1950, but was suspended in 1959 for her opposition to the regime and prevented from teaching again until the ''Estado Novo'' was overthrown by the Carnation Revolution in 1974. Manuel De Brito Camacho
Manuel de Brito Camacho (12 February 1862, Aljustrel — 19 September 1934, Lisbon) a Portuguese military officer, writer, publicist and politician, who among other positions, was Minister of Public Works, Commerce and Industry (1910–1911) and Republican High Commissioner to Portuguese Mozambique (1921 and 1923). He was the founder of the Partido Unionista (''Union Party''), and director of the newspaper ''A Luta'' (''The Struggle''), the mouthpiece of the same Party. António Lobo de Almada Negreiros (13 August 1868 in Alentejo, Aljustrel, Aljustrel – 12 June 1939 in Paris) was an illustrious journalist and colonialist writer, essayist and poet. Castle Of Messejana
The Castle of Messejana ( pt, Castelo de Messejana), is a Portuguese medieval castle in civil parish of Messejana, in the municipality of Aljustrel, in the district of Beja. History Although the region was inhabited prior to the Reconquista, it was sacked in 1235 by forces loyal to King D. Sancho II. The name ''Messejana'' has its origin in the Arab ''masjana'', that refers to prison or jail, a word derived from the verb ''sajana'' (to mean to incarcerate in prison). Proof of Arab occupation comes from excavations at the castle (1992) of silver coins, dating to the Ibn Wazir period. During the reign of King D. Dinis (1279-1325) elevated the Messejana to the status of municipality donating the settlement to the knights of the Order of Santiago, as a way to establish a frontier in the region. Jorge Manuel Guerreiro Soares (born 22 October 1971) is a Portuguese retired footballer who played as a central defender.
