Alison Houston Lockerbie Newton
Alison Houston Lockerbie Newton (1890–1967) was a Canadian painter known for her watercolours and woodblock prints. Biography Newton was born in Leith, Scotland in 1890. From 1900 to 1905 she studied at Trinity Academy in Edinburgh. Newton emigrated with her family to Manitoba, Canada, in 1910. Her first artistic employment was illustrating for the T. Eaton Company. In 1916, Newton married Stanley Newton. After her marriage she returned to university, studying at the Winnipeg School of Art. Her teachers included Alexander J. Musgrove, LeMoine FitzGerald, Frank Johnston, and Walter J. Phillips. From 1930 through 1948 Newton exhibited with the Art Association of Montreal, and in 1941 she exhibited at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Frank Johnston (artist)
Francis Hans Johnston (also known as Frank H. Johnston and as Franz Johnston) (June 19, 1888July 9, 1949) was a member of the Group of Seven. Life and career Frank Johnston was born on June 19, 1888 in Toronto, the son of Hugh Hans and Mary Elizabeth (Roderick) Johnston. He was educated at Central Technical School in Toronto, studying with Gustav Hahn, and the Central Ontario School of Art with William Cruikshank and George Agnew Reid. In 1908, he joined Grip Ltd. as a commercial artist. In 1910, he left for the United States where he studied art in Philadelphia and worked in commercial design in New York. Upon his return to Toronto in 1915, he used his spare time from commercial art to pursue landscape painting, through sketching trips around Toronto. In 1918, he was commissioned by the Canadian War Memorials to record Canadian flying personnel training for overseas duty. The gallery has hosted more than 100 exhibitions and had over 125,000 visitors. Federation Of Canadian Artists
The Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) is an association of artists in Canada founded in Toronto in 1941. The FCA soon had chapters across the country, and was one of the main forces behind formation of the Canada Council in 1957. After this, the national organization withered, and only the British Columbia chapter remained active. A drive for expansion began in 1977, causing a renewal of activity that started in western Canada and then spread. Expansion stalled out in the late 1990s when funding cuts hit the Federation as hard as it hit other arts organization. Renewed vigor by volunteers and staff in recent years has brought new life to the Federation and expansion is again underway. The organization has about 2,700 paying members and 5,000 artist contacts throughout Canada as of the end of 2017, a permanent gallery in Vancouver, and organizes approximately 44 exhibitions every year.
