Alykes ( el, Αλυκές) is a former municipality on the island of Zakynthos, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Zakynthos, of which it is a municipal unit. It is situated along the northeastern coast of the island, about northwest of Zakynthos (city). It has a land area of and a population of 5,203 (2011 census). The seat of the municipality was in Katastari (pop. 1,378). The next largest towns in the municipality are Skoulikádo (pop. 653), Agios Dimitrios (531), Pigadákia (431), Alikanas (441), and Káto Gerakári (347). Ionian Islands (region)
The Ionian Islands Region ( el, Περιφέρεια Ιονίων Νήσων, translit=Periféria Ioníon Níson, ) is the smallest by area of the thirteen administrative regions of Greece located in the Ionian Sea. It comprises all the Ionian Islands except Kythera, which, although historically part of the island group, was separated and integrated to the Attica Region. Demographics The population of the Ionian Islands in 2011 was 207,855, decreased by 1.5% compared to the population in 2001. Nevertheless, the region remains the third by population density with 90.1/km2 nationwide, well above the national of 81.96/km2. The most populous of the major islands is Corfu with a population of 104,371, followed by Zante (40,759), Cephalonia (35,801), Leucas (23,693) and Ithaca (3,231). Kallithea, Zakynthos
Kallithea ( el, Καλλιθέα), is a village and a community in the municipal unit of Alykes in the island of Zakynthos, Greece. In 2011 Kallithea's population was 238 people. It is situated at the eastern foot of the Vrachionas mountains, at about elevation. It is southeast of Katastari, southwest of Ano Gerakari, northwest of Agios Dimitrios and northwest of Zakynthos city. The farm of the Science Park Zakynthos, a Norwegian-Greek institute that focuses on sustainable water use, is situated in Kallithea. The village suffered great damage from the 1953 Ionian earthquake. Artemisia ( el, Αρτεμισία) is a former municipality on the island of Zakynthos, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Zakynthos, of which it is a municipal unit. It is on the central west coast of the island. It has a land area of 104.890 km² and a 2011 census population of 4,612 inhabitants. Its municipal seat was the town of Machairado (pop. 941). Other large towns are Romiri (605), Lagopodo (483), Ágios Léontas (393), Lagkadákia (357), Koiliomenos (391), and Vougiáto (306). Ano Gerakari
Ano Gerakari ( el, Άνω Γερακάρι) is a hilltop village and a community in the municipal unit of Alykes on the island of Zakynthos, Greece. In 2011 its population was 176 for the village and 709 for the community, which includes the villages Alonia and Kastelia. Ano Gerakari is adjacent to the northwest of Meso Gerakari, 4 km east of Katastari and 9 km northwest of Zakynthos city. It suffered great damage from the 1953 Ionian earthquake. With 526 inhabitants in 2011, Alonia is the largest village of the community. It lies northwest of Ano Gerakari, at the foot of the hill. Zakynthos (also spelled Zakinthos; el, Ζάκυνθος, Zákynthos ; it, Zacinto ) or Zante (, , ; el, Τζάντε, Tzánte ; from the Venetian form) is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea.
