Alicia Vargas
Alicia "La Pelé" Vargas (born 1954) is a Mexican former footballer who played for the Mexico Women's National Football Team in the first two Women's World Cups, organised by the International European Federation of Women's Soccer, in 1970 and 1971. In 1999 she was named third best woman of the Century by CONCACAF, jointly with Julie Foudy. Career Vargas played football in the streets as a youth, with her brothers and other boys. Despite opposition from her parents, she continued to play and debuted aged 14 at the Guadalajara club, Mexico City. In 1970, aged 16, she played for the Mexico Women's National Football Team in the first Women's World Cup in Italy. In the quarter-finals Vargas scored 2 of Mexico's 9 goals, against Austria and the team won the game 9–0. Overall the team gained 3rd place, winning 3–2 against England in the 3rd place play off, and Vargas was offered a contract with Real Torino which she chose not to accept. 1970 Women's World Cup
The 1970 Women's World Cup (Italian: Coppa del Mondo; sponsored name Martini & Rossi Cup) was an association football tournament organised by the Federation of Independent European Female Football (FIEFF) in Italy in July 1970. It featured women's teams from seven countries and is the first known tournament to be named as a women's football World Cup. Matches were played in Genoa, Bologna, Milan, Bari, Salerno, Naples, and the third-place playoff and final were both in Turin. The tournament was won by Denmark, represented by Boldklubben Femina. Mexico Women's National Football Team
The Mexico women's national football team represents Mexico on the international stage. The squad is governed by the Mexican Football Federation and competes within CONCACAF, the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football. It has won gold medals in the Central American and Caribbean Games and a silver medal in the Pan American Games team, as well as one silver and one bronze in the Women's World Cup prior to FIFA's recognition of the women's game. The 1971 Women's World Cup (Spanish: 1971 Campeonato de Fútbol Femenil) was an association football tournament organised by the Federation of Independent European Female Football (FIEFF) in Mexico in August–September 1971. Held in Mexico City and Guadalajara, it featured women's teams from six countries and is the second known tournament to be named as a women's football World Cup after the 1970 edition in Italy. It was twenty years before the first official FIFA women's world cup. Alongside Mexico, who qualified automatically as hosts, teams from South America and Europe qualified to the 1971 cup. Julie Foudy
Julie Maurine Foudy ( ; born January 23, 1971) is an American retired soccer midfielder, two-time FIFA Women's World Cup champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist. She played for the United States women's national soccer team from 1988 to 2004. Foudy finished her international career with 274 caps and served as the team's captain from 2000 to 2004 as well as the co-captain from 1991 to 2000. In 1997, she was the first American and first woman to receive the FIFA Fair Play Award. From 2000 to 2002, Foudy served as president of the Women's Sports Foundation. In 2006, she co-founded the Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy, an organization focused on developing leadership skills in teenage girls.
