Alice Parizeau
Alice Parizeau, OC (née Alicja Poznańska; 25 July 1930 – 30 September 1990) was a Polish-Canadian writer, essayist, journalist and criminologist. Early life Her parents were Stanislaw Poznański (1894 - 1943) and Rebeka (Bronislawa Breina) Kestenberg (1892-1943) Polish Jews murdered in the Holocaust, both in Otwock, Poland according to the testimony of Kestenberg's brother, Yehuda Adam Kestenberg, recorded in Yad Vashem. Stanislaw Poznański was the son of Karol Poznański and grandson of Izrael Poznański, a famous Polish-Jewish businessman, textile magnate and philanthropist (Philanthropy) in Łódź. Born in Łuniniec, Poland, as a young girl Poznańska was associated with the Polish Home Army during the 1944 Warsaw Uprising during World War II, which led to her internment in the Bergen-Belsen prisoner of war camp and her receipt of a war medal following the war. ''La Patrie'' was a Montreal, Quebec daily newspaper founded by Honoré Beaugrand on February 24, 1879. It became a weekly in 1957 and folded in 1978. Its political affiliation was originally Liberal, but Beaugrand officially broke with the party in 1891 and the paper became deprived of its traditional support group. ''La Patrie's'' circulation numbers sagged until Beaugrand, in declining health, sold his newspaper for $50,000 to Joseph-Israël Tarte in 1897. By the turn of the twentieth century Tarte had turned his new property into an increasingly nonpartisan publication with the city's second-largest circulation for a French-language daily newspaper (topped only by '' La Presse''). Saint-Esprit (French for "Holy Spirit") is a municipality in the Lanaudière region of Quebec, Canada, part of the Montcalm Regional County Municipality. It is located on both banks of the Saint-Esprit River, a tributary of the L'Assomption River. History The area's first settlers arrived at the end of 18th century and were mostly from L'Ange-Gardien, Beauport, and Saint-Sulpice. Originally, the area was identified as the Rivière-Saint-Esprit or Grand-Saint-Esprit Concession. In 1808, the Parish of Saint-Ours-du-Saint-Esprit was founded, however after 1838, the parish name was shortened to just Saint-Esprit to avoid confusion with another parish called Saint-Ours in the Diocese of Montreal. Outremont is an affluent residential borough (''arrondissement'') of the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It consists entirely of the former city on the Island of Montreal in southwestern Quebec.
