''Alias Jimmy Valentine'' is an old-time radio crime drama in the United States. It was broadcast on NBC-Blue January 18, 1938 - February 27, 1939. Format The concept for ''Alias Jimmy Valentine'' came from writer O. Henry in his short story "A Retrieved Reformation". That story was adapted into the 1910 play ''Alias Jimmy Valentine'' by Paul Armstrong. The program's stories focused on Lee Randall, described by Jim Cox in his book, ''Radio Crime Fighters: More Than 300 Programs from the Golden Age'' as "an ex-con and reformed safecracker hoapplied his talents and enormous underworld contacts to abet the forces of law and order". While doing so, he became an honest bank clerk and fell in love with the daughter of the banker. The Golden Age of Radio, also known as the old-time radio (OTR) era, was an era of radio in the United States where it was the dominant electronic home entertainment medium. It began with the birth of commercial radio broadcasting in the early 1920s and lasted through the 1950s, when television gradually superseded radio as the medium of choice for scripted programming, variety and dramatic shows. Radio was the first broadcast medium, and during this period people regularly tuned in to their favorite radio programs, and families gathered to listen to the home radio in the evening. A Retrieved Reformation
"A Retrieved Reformation" is a short story by American author O. Henry first published in '' The Cosmopolitan Magazine'', April 1903. The original title was "A Retrieved Reform". It was illustrated by A.I. Keller. History The story describes the events which lead up to the reformation of an ex-convict. In 1910, dramatist Paul Armstrong adapted the story into a highly successful Broadway play under the title ''Alias Jimmy Valentine'' which ran 155 performances at Wallack's Theatre in New York. Frank Hummert
Edward Frank Hummert, Jr. (June 2, 1884 – March 12, 1966), professionally known as Frank Hummert and sometimes credited as E. Frank Hummert, was an American advertising agent originally but was best known for writing/producing episodes of nearly 100 daytime/primetime radio dramas and soap opera serials between the 1930s and the 1950s. Hummert, along with his wife Anne Hummert, became the monarchs of daytime radio with dramas such as '' Just Plain Bill'' (1932–55), ''The Romance of Helen Trent'' (1933–60), '' Ma Perkins'' (1933–60), and ''Backstage Wife'' (1935–59). Anne Hummert (née Schumacher) (January 19, 1905 – July 5, 1996) was the leading creator of daytime radio serials or soap opera dramas during the 1930s and 1940s, responsible for more than three dozen series. Biography She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, one of four children. Bertram Lytell (February 24, 1885 – September 28, 1954) was an American actor in theater and film during the silent film era and early talkies. He starred in romantic, melodrama, and adventure films. Background Born in New York City, Lytell was the son of actor, author, and producer William H. Lytell and Blanche Mortimer. His mother was an actress before she married, and her father and grandfather were actors. Lytell left Upper Canada College at age 16 to become an actor. Lytell's acting debut came with the Columbia Stock Company in Newark, New Jersey, when he was 17 years old. William Bennett Kilpack (February 6, 1883 in Long Melford – August 17, 1962 in Santa Monica, CA, Santa Monica) known simply as Bennett Kilpack, was an actor, director and playwright. Dick Joy (December 28, 1915 – October 31, 1991) was an American radio and television announcer. A journalism major at the University of Southern California, he went on to become well known on network radio and television. Early years Joy's involvement with radio at the local level began when, while a student at USC, he worked part-time for radio stations in Los Angeles, California. David Ford Bond (October 23, 1904 – August 15, 1962) was an American radio personality. He was the announcer for several popular radio shows in the 1930s and 1940s, earning him a spot on the '' This Is Your Life'' television show.
