Ghassan Alian
Ghassan Alian ( ar, غسان عليان, he, רסאן עליאן; born 21 March 1972), is an Israeli executive officer of IDF's Central Command, Major general by rank. Alian is one of the highest ranking Druze in the IDF and has served since 1990. Biography Ghassan Alian is from Shefa-'Amr. His wife, Shirin, works as a Hebrew teacher in a local school. They have three children. Military career Alian was Chief Infantry and Paratroopers Officer and commanding officer of the Golani Brigade. He is the first non-Jewish commander of the brigade and the second Druze officer to command an Israel Defense Forces infantry brigade; the first was Imad Fares, commander of the Givati Brigade. Alian was previously the commander of the Duchifat Battalion, a reserve unit commander with the Alexandroni Brigade, and commander of the Menashe District Brigade near Jenin in the West Bank. Golani Brigade
The 1st "Golani" Brigade ( he, חֲטִיבַת גּוֹלָנִי) is an Israeli military infantry brigade that is subordinated to the 36th Division and traditionally associated with the Northern Command. It is one of the five infantry brigades of the regular Israel Defense Forces (IDF) (the others being the Paratroopers Brigade, the Nahal Brigade, the Givati Brigade and the Kfir Brigade). Its symbol is a green olive tree against a yellow background, with its soldiers wearing a brown beret. It is one of the most highly decorated infantry units in the IDF. The brigade consists of five battalions, including two which it kept from its inception (12th and 13th), one transferred from the Givati Brigade (51st). The Alian Kızılbaşī community (in Bulgarian: алиани, in Turkish: Alevi), are a Shi`a order, similar to the Sufi Mevlevi, who live in several regions of Bulgaria. Alians revere the name "Ali" carried by their circle of 12 Imams ''(awliya'),'' which they consider an emanation of God. They follow the mystical rituals of the wandering dervishes. Origin theories Their exact origin is not certain, since few relevant historical records have been preserved, but according to the prevailing theory they fled to Bulgaria from Central Anatolia after the 1512 victory by the Ottoman Sultan Selim I, a Sunni, over the first, part- Turcoman Safavid shah of the Persians, Ismail I.
