Ali Shahbazi
Ali Shahbazi ( fa, علی شهبازی) is the former commander-in-chief of the Iranian Army. Career Shahbazi was appointed by Rafsanjani as the chief of staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Joint Staff on 7 May 1988. Shahbazi was the first commander-in-chief of the Iranian Army. Amir ( fa, امير), previously known as Timsar ( fa, تيمسار), is the honorific title used for officer of high rank, ranking 2nd Brigadier General and higher in the Islamic Republic of Iran Army. Mohammad Salimi ( fa, محمد سلیمی; 1937 – 2016) was an Iranian military who served as the 6th Minister of Defense in November 1981 to August 1984 and the commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army in 2000 to 2005. Early life Salimi was born in Mashhad in 1937. Career Salimi was the defense minister in the cabinet of Mir-Hossein Mousavi, replacing Javad Fakoori. He was in office from 1981 to August 1984. There are currently 12 two-star officers in the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran: four with the regular army (''Artesh'') background, seven who served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and one with both backgrounds. Although the ranks of general (''Arteshbod'') and lieutenant general (''sepahbod'') exist in Iran by the book, the highest military rank practically available to active duty personnel of the Iranian Armed Forces during Islamic Republic era had been two-star rank of major general (''sarlashgar'') and its naval equivalent rear admiral (''daryaban'').
