Algoma Central Railway
The Algoma Central Railway is a railway in Northern Ontario that operates between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst. It used to have a branch line to Wawa, Ontario. The area served by the railway is sparsely populated, with few roads. The railway is well known for its Agawa Canyon tour train. Until 2015, the line also provided passenger train service to canoeists, snowmobilers, cottagers and tourists accessing this wilderness recreation region. The Algoma Foundry and Machine Company of Algoma, Wisconsin began its corporate existence in 1883 as a regional manufacturer of horse-drawn farm machinery. However, in 1920 the company started making the "OK" silo filler or stationary ensilage harvester. Immediately following its introduction the OK silo filler became very popular with the dairy farming market across the Upper Midwest of the United States. Sales of the OK soon made the ''Algoma Company'' a leading producer of silo fillers in the entire nation. The ''Algoma Foundry and Machine Company'' was founded in 1883 as ''A. Hamacek and Company'' by Adolph and Anton Hamacek of Algoma Wisconsin. The Company manufactured horse-drawn farm machinery for the regional market. Algoma Treatment And Remand Centre
The Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre (formerly Northern Treatment Centre) is a medium/maximum security prison located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario Canada. The entire centre has a capacity of 104 beds. Treatment Centre As a Treatment Centre, it provides "specialized and intensive treatment for motivated offenders with clearly identified problems relating to substance abuse, sexual misconduct, impulse control and anger management." Algoma University, commonly shortened to Algoma U or Algoma, is a public university with its main campus located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. Algoma District is a district and census division in Northeastern Ontario in the Canadian province of Ontario. The name was created by an American ethnologist, Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), who was appointed Indian agent to the Ojibwe in Sault Ste. Marie region in 1822. "Al" is derived from Algonquin, while "goma" is a variant of gomee, meaning lake or water. Algoma District has shoreline along Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Algoma is an unincorporated community on the east shore of Upper Klamath Lake, in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. It is about north of the city of Klamath Falls on U.S. Route 97. Algoma was named for the Algoma Lumber Company. History In 1909, R. H. Hovey bought of timberland on the east shore of Upper Klamath Lake in Klamath County, Oregon. That was the beginning of the Algoma Lumber Company. In 1912, Hovey built a large sawmill with a capacity to mill 100,000 board-feet (236 m3) of lumber per shift. Since the mill ran two shifts per day, the mill's daily production capacity was 200,000 board-feet (472 m3). The company grew rapidly. Algoma is a city in Kewaunee County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 3,167 at the 2010 census. Algoma is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The Ahnapee settlement, which eventually became known as Algoma, was founded in 1834 by Joseph McCormick of Manitowoc. In 1851, Irish and English pioneers moved to the area and called the place ''Wolf River''. This was a loose translation from the Indian word An-Ne-Pe, meaning "land of the great gray wolf."
