Algoma Coal and Coke Company Store, also known as Tug River Health Clinic, is a historic company store building located at Algoma, McDowell County, West Virginia. It was built in the 1948 to a design by Welch architect Hassel T. Hicks.Chambers, S. Allen. ''Buildings of West Virginia''. New York: Oxford University Press, 2004. It is a two-story building with a flat roof, with exterior walls of glazed yellow tile with alternating bands of red brick in the Moderne style. It originally housed a store and offices and has also been home to a health clinic. Algoma is an unincorporated community in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. Algoma is located adjacent to the town of Northfork. Its post office was established in 1891 and discontinued in 1988. Algoma most likely was derived from the Algonquin language. McDowell County, West Virginia
McDowell County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,111. Its county seat is Welch. McDowell County is the southernmost county in the state. It was created in 1858 by the Virginia General Assembly and named for Virginia Governor James McDowell. It became a part of West Virginia in 1863, when several Union-affiliated counties seceded from the state of Virginia during the American Civil War. McDowell County is located in the Cumberland Mountains, part of the Appalachia region. Due mostly to a decline in employment in the coal mining industry, McDowell County's population has decreased from almost 100,000 in 1950 to less than 20,000 in 2020. Welch is a city located in McDowell County in the State of West Virginia, United States. The population was 3,590 at the 2020 census, however the 2021 census estimate put the population at 1,914, due to the McDowell Prison complex in the northeast splitting from the city of Welch as part of unincorporated McDowell County. Incorporated as a city in 1893, it is the county seat of McDowell County. History Welch was incorporated in 1893 and named after Isaiah A. Welch, a former captain in the Confederate States Army who came to the region as a surveyor, and helped establish the plan for the beginning of a new town at the confluence of Tug Fork and Elkhorn Creek. Welch was made the county seat of McDowell County in an election by county citizens in 1892 even before Welch was incorporated as a city.
